A very Merry Christmas from me and Sonny.

@britishsewingbee Christmas Special is available to watch on the @bbciplayer now.
Patrick Grant Instagram - At @community_clothing we buy our cloth from the UK's finest textile mills. Take a whizz round the fantastic 240 year old @awhainsworth mill in Pudsey in West Yorkshire with this grinning wool lover. See how they make the amazing melton cloth from which we sew our mens peacoats. See the film on the Stories section of the Community Clothing website (link in bio)

Big thanks to @campaignforwool for filming the trip.

Patrick Grant Instagram - Did you ever stop to think what your sports clothes are made from? Well the truth is, your sports clothes are made of PLASTIC.

The manufacture of the synthetic materials used in modern athletic clothing uses tens of millions of barrels of oil each year. It is highly polluting and has a huge carbon footprint. Discarded synthetic sports clothes are a massive contributor to the growing global problem of non-biodegradable clothing waste, and to the vast quantity of ocean microplastics, over a third of which is plastic fibres from our clothing.

This is why I am so proud to launch Community Clothing Organic Athletic, our range of 100% plastic free sportswear. It represents radically different thinking in the world of performance sportswear, made from innovative 100% plant-based textile technology, it is high performance, but crucially 100% organic, natural and biodegradable!

It has taken us 5 years to develop, and it has been quite a mission. Every tiny bit of every garment has had to be thought about afresh, 7 factories, 6 in the UK and 1 in Austria, have had to take a leap of faith and join us in this, but it has been so worth it. This is sportswear for people who love the planet.

I really hope you like it.

PS A huge thank to @clairebensondance and her amazing crew in Bournemouth for bringing all the good vibes to the video we made. That's some of them in the pictures, you can see them all in the full film on the @community_clothing website, the link is in my bio.

PPS thats my first endo in about 25 years, quite proud of that too (on a fold up 1970s BSA an all)

Patrick Grant Instagram - @community_clothing Organic Athletic represents completely new thinking in sportswear. 5 years in the making by our small team and our manufacturing partners, the pieces are made using 100% plant based, organic, natural, biodegradable performance textiles and contain absolutely no plastic, not in the fabrics, the thread, the labels or logos, or the packaging. We're very proud of what we've achieved.

Patrick Grant Instagram - 70 years ago today Roger Bannister ran the first sub 4 minute mile, at the Iffley Road track in oxford (where I did athletics as a student), a feat previously thought humanly impossible. Interestingly, in a world where all our sportwear is now made of plastic, Roger ran that day in cotton vest and shorts, and was wearing leather running shoes. He ran late in the afternoon having already done a shift at a nearby hospital where he was a doctor, he ran in 25mph winds and the pouring rain, on a cinder track, fuelled only by a bowl porridge. To many it is the greatest sporting feat of all time.
Happy Roger Bannister day.

Patrick Grant Instagram - We’re delighted to announce a new partnership with designer and Sewing Bee judge @patrickgrantism. Patrick shares our passion for the creation of exceptional quality products, made with locally sourced, natural materials, handcrafted here in the UK using traditional techniques. He is a true champion of British manufacturing and British textiles – something close to our heart - and will be helping us to spread the word on how we do things a little differently.

Patrick says, ā€˜I’m so pleased to be working with the brilliant Harrison Spinks. Their beds are amazing, but moreover their dedication to doing things the right way, for their customers, their amazing staff, and the planet, is a fantastic example to other businesses.’

We can’t wait to share more news over the coming weeks and months.

Patrick Grant Instagram - For the past half century our economy and big business have been run solely for profit, with people a secondary consideration, and the planet no consideration at all. It's time to change that, to reshape our economy putting people and planet first, to support and create businesses that do good for all of us, not just a wealthy few.
These are some of the books I read whilst researching my book LESS, which is a discussion about consumption, work, quality, and how they shape our society and our happiness.

Patrick Grant Instagram - It's the way he tells em.

I was honoured to be part of the first King's Foundation Awards at St James' Palace, alongside HM The King, and fellow ambassadors @sirrodstewart @davidbeckham @alantitchmarshmbe @penny.lancaster @sarah.beeny @raymondblanc @siennathing @edward_enninful @naomi .

@kingsfdn is a brilliant charity providing opportunities for young people in some of the most deprived areas of the UK to learn everything from heritage crafts to regenerative farming, the stuff we should all get a chance to learn at school but most of us don't. It is also commited to helping rebuild communities around good work, in harmony with nature, something that is central to everything we do at @community_clothing.

Congratulations to all of our wonderful winners, but especially to Ban Ki-Moon, the man under whose leadership the UN sealed the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Paris Climate Accords. Some legacy that.

Patrick Grant Instagram - I’ve been writing books. Two of them, back-to-back, which in hindsight might not have been the cleverest idea. The first is called The Savile Row Suit and it's out now! (my second, Less, is out in May). This book is a celebration of the wonderful craft of bespoke tailoring as practiced by the amazing community of tailors Ive had the great privilege to work thith these past twenty years. Its also personal reflection my time on the Row.

This community of craftsmen and women is unique, and incredibly special, and the clothes they produce have no equals in quality. They are produced with exceptional skill and care, with a tiny environmental footprint, and are almost without exception cherished by those who own them. Theyre, often repaired and altered over decades of happy use, and frequently passed on. The tailors, tailoring houses and cloth houses can trace a lineage back through seven centuries of exceptional British craftsmanship and this gives the clothes made there a meaning far beyond their physical make-up.

The values I learned whilst working on Savile Row are the values I still bring to Community Clothing; namely quality, enduring value, and a commitment to well paid, skilled work. Many of the factories I work with today, from knitwear to cloth makers, are mills I first worked with two decades ago when I started with Nortons. Whilst the price points could not be more different, the ethos of Community Clothing and the great tailoring houses of Savile Row are very much the same and I am proud to be associated with both of them.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped me with the book: to Riki Brockman @solomon.browne.bespoke for writing most of the technical sections, and thanks to Rachel Smith @ragen_cagen , Chris Ktori, Felicity Hamacher and the team at @Emmawillislondon, especially Lizzie Willets for patiently allowing us to follow and document your methods. I dont think there has ever been such a complete record of this incredible craft.
You can buy a copy of The Savile Row Suit through the @gestalten website, and at a handful of other good book sellers.

Enjoy

Take a whizz round the fantastic 240 year old @awhainsworth mill in Pudsey in West Yorkshire with this grinning wool lover. See how they make the amazing melton cloth from which we sew our mens peacoats. See the film on the Stories section of the Community Clothing website (link in bio)

Big thanks to @campaignforwool for filming the trip.

Patrick Grant - 8.4K Likes - Did you ever stop to think what your sports clothes are made from?

We're very proud of what we've achieved.

Ps Banners made from old bedsheets and fabric scraps by the students at Bournemouth Uni, and @clairebensondance with the help of her sister Anna and others.

Patrick Grant - 4.6K Likes - 70 years ago today Roger Bannister ran the first sub 4 minute mile, at the Iffley Road track in oxford (where I did athletics as a student), a feat previously thought humanly impossible.

Patrick says, ā€˜I’m so pleased to be working with the brilliant Harrison Spinks. Their beds are amazing, but moreover their dedication to doing things the right way, for their customers, their amazing staff, and the planet, is a fantastic example to other businesses.’

It's time to change that, to reshape our economy putting people and planet first, to support and create businesses that do good for all of us, not just a wealthy few.
These are some of the books I read whilst researching my book LESS, which is a discussion about consumption, work, quality, and how they shape our society and our happiness.

The stack, piled in no particular order:

The Affluent Society by John Kenneth Galbraith
The Fable of the Bees by Bernard Mandeville
The Craftsman by Richard Sennet
The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
Working by Studs Terkel
The Limits to Growth by Meadows, Meadows, Randers & Behrens
Utilitarianism and Other Essays by John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham
Capital by Karl Marx
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell
Free And Equal by Daniel Chandler
Fabric by Victoria Finlay
Fewer Better Things by Glen Adamson
Clothing A Global History by Robert Ross
Propaganda by Edward Bernays
Earth Logic by Kate Fletcher & Mathilda Tham

Patrick Grant - 3.4K Likes - I’ve been writing books.

Caption : I’ve been writing books. Two of them, back-to-back, which in hindsight might not have been the cleverest idea. The first is called The Savile Row Suit and it’s out now! Enjoy
