Rain Valdez Instagram - My mother gave birthed to me in the Philippines. But I met her when I was 5, because she left when I was 2 to work abroad to send money back. While she was away, I was raised by my Lolo and Lola (grandparents) but I always referred to them as Mama and Papa because my mothers siblings did. My Tito’s and Tita’s; they were their parents, so I thought they were mine too. Mama and Papa were my heroes and allowed me to be whoever I wanted. One day, when I was 5, my mom showed up and everyone told me “your mom is home, give her some love”. With no memory of her, and because I already had Mama and Papa, I was confused. Having been spoiled by Mama and Papa, and knowing how to think for myself, I protested to my family, “no I don’t like her. She is not my mom”! But my mother had plans. And she soon migrated me and my older sister to Guam, with her and my new step father, as I kicked and screamed unsuccessfully to the airport. It would be a very long time before I got to see Mama and Papa again and my Tito’s and Tita’s. Though I had some resentments, I fell in love with my mother while I was on Guam. She became my best friend. But It wasn’t until I was a teenager when I got to visit the Philippines again. I got to see just how easy I had it on Guam and there was already a plan for me to move to Los Angeles to pursue my education and career in the arts. That’s when I realized what my mother had done for me. What we had to sacrifice just to be who I am today. Parading around in my privileged diet, youthful skin, statuesque, and legalized trans affirming glory. Abundant in possibilities, rich in friends and loved ones. All because my mother took a very calculated risk and made the impossible, possible. I would do it all over again with you. I miss you and I love you, mom. I haven’t shared much publicly this past year but it was a year of big failures and big love. Meeting failure, I cried so hard in fear of the arrival of my weakness. But in my most vulnerable and powerless moments, I didn’t find weakness. In the silence I found solitude and wisdom, and my support system showed up. Rendering me heart-softened and recklessly in love with my life, in truth, and intoxicated by the silliness of it all. How can one lose so much and still gain it all? Overwhelmed with gratitude for every one in my life who constantly prove to me just exactly how lovable I am. Even in my most nothing state. Just when I thought I couldn’t go deeper or reach any higher. I fell into love. Thank you for the spiritual growth, the solitude, the community and the much needed expansion of my heart. I have a feeling I will be sharing more in 2024. Because love and aligned purpose is meant to be shared. I’ll see you all soon. 🥳 Happy New Year! xRain
