Richard O'Barry Instagram - BREAKING: Rescued Dolphin Johnny Gets 22 New Teeth!
The thought of freeing Rocky and Rambo and having to leave Johnny behind—and in isolation—was unbearable for all of us. But what could we do? Johnny’s teeth were worn down to the gums. He couldn’t catch fish properly. So we got busy, we got creative. “Leave no dolphin behind” became our new mantra. And we turned Johnny into a bionic dolphin! Read the incredible story of Johnny’s transformation by clicking the link in my bio, or visit: DolphinProject.com
Richard O'Barry Instagram - Heartbroken 💔

@JamesCameronOfficial was my hero. I was actually star struck when he reached out to shake my hand as we walked the red carpet towards to stage of the iconic Kodak Theater to pick up the Oscar ten years ago.

That was then. This is now.

So, I woke up this morning and read my pile of mail, then checked the latest news. A promotional video for the new Avatar movie stopped me in my tracks. I just caught the end of the video where the performing dolphins did their final trick. And now I’m watching my hero applaud the pathetic dolphin show he just participated in and apparently enjoyed—why else would one applaud? I have no doubt the dolphins have a connection to the bloody cove, in Taiji, Japan. This video broke my heart: https://youtu.be/fRR_59i_tFM
“Never applaud any wild animal performing for you” - I’ve been saying that for more than fifty years, that and, “Please do not buy a ticket for a dolphin show” - I’ve reached millions of people with these simple messages. And I’m just a small voice in the wind compared to the mega-voice of James Cameron. Just imagine the impact his Avatar franchise would have if he included an anti-dolphin captivity message in his films. He’s a very strong advocate for his vegan lifestyle. I admire that greatly. I look up to him. So why can’t he make the connection to the captive dolphins? I just don’t get it! (Message to Mister Cameron: I still love you, but please see “The Cove” movie asap.)

Richard O'Barry Instagram - An Open Letter to James Cameron and Avatar Crew:

I am hereby formally inviting James Cameron, Jon Landau, Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang to join me and our team in Taiji, Japan. Yes, I’ll be going back and am formally asking the Avatar team to join me for just a few days. I’d like to personally show them where the dolphins that entertained them so well most likely came from. I’d like to show them exactly how dolphins are captured in Japan. I’d like to show them that trainers who purport to care for dolphins work alongside those that brutally slaughter dolphins. I’m sure, once they witness this first-hand, they will never applaud another captive dolphin show again.”

Richard O'Barry Instagram - Let’s Ban Whale Stadiums from Civilized Society: There is something profoundly obscene about a magnificent creature such as Lolita living and dying in a concrete and glass STADIUM. Unfortunately this abuse is going to continue until the consumer stops buying tickets. There is no other way to stop this madness. It’s all about supply and demand. The government regulators won’t fix the problem—they ARE the problem. A portion of each ticket sold goes to government in the form of taxes—ever since 1938. Richard O'Barry Instagram - URGENT ACTION ALERT ‼️ Please contact the Minister of Justice, Kingdom of Denmark, Peter Hummelgaard. Ask him (politely) to please consider the fate of Paul Watson very carefully before he makes a decision on August 15th. Japanese jails and prisons are dangerous for Western anti-whaling activists, especially Paul. He and I don’t always agree on things, but we both agree on this: Japanese prisons are run by a sadistic, dangerous system. Inmates can be very dangerous too, violence is commonplace behind prison walls in Japan. I know of what I speak. I’ve been there, done that, got the scars to prove it. Let’s share the contact information for the Minister of Justice (posted below) and ask everyone to contact him directly with a polite message to DENY THE REQUEST from the vindictive Japanese government to hand Paul Watson over to them. If Denmark makes the wrong decision, it will have blood on its hands forever. And a bad decision could be a death sentence for Paul. He would not be able to defend himself in this violent environment, especially at his age. Please Contact the Minister of Justice: Call 45-72268400

Richard O'Barry Instagram - BREAKING: Orcas trapped in ice in Northern Japan.
Tuesday (Feb 6) morning local time, the Rausu Coast Guard received a report of a group of orcas trapped in drift ice off the coast of Rausu, Hokkaido. As reported by Kyodo News, a representative said, “There is no way to rescue them as the ship cannot get close enough to them.”
Later reported by Yahoo News, Tuesday afternoon local time, the orcas were no longer visible by local monitors.
Richard O'Barry Instagram - A LETTER TO TOKI/LOLITA: “Imagine if Miami Seaquarium had said something like this: “Dear Toki, we are sorry for what humans did to you. We feel enormous guilt that humans stole your entire life from you, and we fully realize the trauma and the irrevocable losses you have suffered since the capture team netted you and dragged you away from your mother, your pod, and your vast ocean world. We are truly sorry.” — Helene O’Barry. Photo by Claire Beatrix Paris, “Until Lolita is Home” (Full story at DolphinProject.com)

Richard O'Barry Instagram - Exploring the Edge: Contemplating new ideas and pushing the limits of what a proper dolphin sanctuary (in the right location), could become. There are several whale and dolphin sanctuaries on the drawing boards, but there is one dolphin sanctuary already in operation and exploring new ideas. Dolphin Rambo chose Umah Lumba as his go-to dolphin sanctuary. HE made that choice himself. Rambo still lives around here somewhere, actually everywhere around here. Rent free too. Pretty good deal. Rambo comes and goes as he pleases through the open gate. He forages for his own fish, the special ones HE chooses. He does this both inside and outside the floating seapen. Then he might swim to the next bay which is about 14 kilometers away and take a nap, but he always returns. Someday Rambo may meet someone and decide to leave and swim away from this island like Rocky did. And that’s okay. Freedom is about choices and decisions. We could have done the same thing in Norway with Beluga Hvaldimir, but not without the co-operation of the national government. #dolphinproject #bksdabali #jakartaanimalaidnetwork #theexplorersclub
Richard O'Barry Instagram - I’m sorry but I still don’t understand mister Cameron even though he sent a message of explanation. But not exactly. He asked a few friends, Louie and Brian to explain for him. This video clip contradicts that message, and Avatar’s message too. So I’m still hoping he responds to my open letter. I’d love to show him where the dolphins came from, and how they were captured. Maybe he will change his mind about wanting to ride a dolphin inside a building in Tokyo.

Richard O'Barry Instagram - “Sigourney Weaver, who played conservationist Dian Fossey in the 1988 film Gorillas in the Mist and has since become a powerful voice for gorillas and other wildlife, also addressed the crowd. She said: “Thank you for having us today, this was so exciting, by far the best and most amazing show with these amazing animals I’ve ever seen.” She added that the 14-year old girl Kiri, whom she portrays in Avatar, would have loved the show, too. Her exact words were: “Let me just say that Kiri would have loved all of this so much, and mostly because the dolphins looked like they were having a wonderful time, so thank you.” Sigourney’s positive take on the captive dolphin spectacle was especially surprising to me, since she is the recipient of the prestigious Jane Alexander Global Wildlife Ambassador Award. I couldn’t help but wonder how she would have reacted if gorillas were performing for her inside a small cage instead of dolphins. Would she have loved it just as much? And if the answer to that is no, then why not? After all, dolphins have larger brains than gorillas or anybody in the room. “ - Helene O’Barry, DolphinProject.com 🐬

Richard O'Barry Instagram - The Damage is Done ~ by Helene O’Barry

“It was depressing to watch a video of celebrity movie director James Cameron promote Avatar: The Way of Water during a dolphin show in Japan. Several weeks earlier, I had bought tickets to see the movie with our daughter Mai Li, and when we were sitting in the theater, I kept thinking about that scene of Cameron and his colleagues applauding enthusiastically as a group of dolphins worked their way through a series of trained circus behaviors inside a minuscule and artificially lit dolphin stadium in Tokyo.” ~ Helene O’Barry

Richard O'Barry Instagram - I’m not interested in trashing anyone who attended the Avatar’s dolphin show in Tokyo. I’m simply trying to understand what they were thinking while applauding the captive dolphin show in Tokyo. Nobody can speak for the participants, they alone know what they were thinking—but they have all gone silent. Probably by instruction.
Richard O'Barry Instagram - Ain’t it the truth.
Richard O'Barry Instagram - Free at Last! At 9:33 a.m. local time, Johnny was the first to go out, leading the way for the other two dolphins to follow. This ‘elder statesman’ swam a few yards into the opening, and then swam to the side of the main pen, where he began communicating with Rocky and Rambo. Within moments, they too swam out of the pen. All three dolphins dove down, popping up about 20 yards away. Logging on the surface of the water, they were definitely looking back at us. Then, in unison, they dove down again, this time, popping up about 150 yards away. They were heading towards the open ocean. When the dolphins reached the mouth of the bay, they turned around, coming back towards the center of the bay. They swam by the sea pen, turned again, and then swam into a straight line towards the open water. Once they crossed the threshold where the bay met the open ocean, they were gone.

Richard O'Barry Instagram - (Turn up sound) Hunting with Sonar Once Again: We don’t feed the dolphins in the foraging pen. They feed themselves. The village fishermen simply introduce live fish into the pen during the night. In the morning the dolphins enter the pen and they must locate the fish, chase them down and feed themselves. Many times they work together to accomplish this. The three dolphins have returned to the same “cooperative foraging techniques” their mothers taught them. The dolphins used these same techniques successfully everyday before they were captured and dumped into a hotel swimming pool. Listen to them stun the fish with their sonar. They could never do this in the hotel swimming pool for those ten long years of brutal captivity. To watch them work together as a team catching fish is a beautiful thing to behold. (Video by Gede)

From 2021 to 2023, numerous USDA inspection reports cited serious problems at Miami Seaquarium. These allegedly include:

- severely cutting the diets of nine dolphins at Miami Seaquarium’s Dolphin Harbor for the purposes of ensuring the animals performed better for guest interactions,
- visibly emaciated dolphins, with prominent muscle wasting and palpable scapula and ribs,
- gastrointestinal abnormalities amongst the dolphins, including multiple instances of excessive regurgitation,
- multiple aggressive incidents against trainers, and even members of the public,
- potentially placing incompatible animals together resulting in the injuries and/or deaths of cetaceans and pinnipeds,
- poor water flow leading to an increase in bacteria and algae in several tanks and pools,
- poor-quality fish fed to marine mammals which could result in illness and/or death,
- insufficient shelter to protect the mammals from direct sunlight

Enough is enough. Help us ask the Mayor of Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners to cancel Miami Seaquarium’s lease. In this day and age, Miami doesn’t need captive dolphins. #DolphinProject #ThanksButNoTanks

Richard O'Barry Instagram - Freeing Flipper: Li’i should have gone to a temporary dolphin sanctuary by now—and it’s not too late. Nothing complicated about building one in a well chosen location somewhere on the Pacific coast where his species belongs. We built this simple dolphin sanctuary in less than a week in Laguna, Brazil. Many different configurations will work, but a straight line is the shortest distance between two points. So, this is the fastest, cheapest way to do it in an emergency. We built this one for the last captive dolphin in Brazil, his name was “Flipper.” This temporary sanctuary should not be confused with our floating seapen sanctuary in Bali: Umah Lumba. This sanctuary in Laguna, Brazil is a “fixed” seapen, the poles are driven into the sand bottom, as opposed to a “floating” seapen. As it turned out, Flipper was an excellent candidate for freedom. We simply opened the gate after a few months of intense rehabilitation and gave Flipper a choice. (Freedom is about choices and decisions.) If he had stayed we would have taken care of him forever. He chose freedom. He was seen and photographed 366 days later, 300 miles away. And 22 months later he was still in the area, videotaped by tourists. Measurable progress. Actual proof of success. I’m not suggesting Li’I is a candidate for freedom. Pelagic species like Li’I travel in huge groups, for one thing. It’s complicated. One never knows which dolphin is a candidate until you empty the tank and transfer the dolphin to natural sea water and start the rehabilitation process. #dolphinsanctuaryproject
Richard O'Barry Instagram - United we stand, divided we fail: Dolphin Project Supports ALL Japanese citizens, including animal rights activists working hard to abolish the dolphin massacre in Taiji. And it is especially important for EVERYBODY to support the Japanese citizens who are legal residents of Taiji, and brave enough to stand up and be counted. They are very special. We hope many more Japanese citizens will take up residence in Taiji. Why not! It’s very inexpensive to live here. It’s absolutely beautiful, one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. And the majority of residents are kind and gentle country folks. Please do not let a small minority of dolphin hunters, and dolphin dealers, discourage you. They are not the majority. So if you are a peaceful Japanese citizen looking to relocate out of the city, you might consider moving to Taiji, or a neighboring village. Wish I could do that too, but I’m not a Japanese citizen. But maybe it’s possible in the future, since our lovely daughter Mai Li O’Barry is considering attending the University of Tokyo in the future.
Richard O'Barry Instagram - Update on Orca Morgan by Helene O’Barry: Morgan is believed to belong to a community of orcas in Norway. She somehow became separated from her pod and was found alone and malnourished off the coast of the Netherlands in June 2010. She ended up at Harderwijk dolphinarium and was held there for over a year. In November 2011, after a Dutch court decided that returning Morgan to her family was not an option, Morgan was sent to Loro Parque’s orca stadium on the Spanish island of Tenerife. She has lived here since then and performs daily in front of mainly European holiday makers. In September 2018, Morgan gave birth to a daughter, named Ula, but the calf died just short of her third birthday in August 2021. *Visit www.DolphinProject.com to learn more about Morgan’s sad life at Loro Parque.* Image by Helene O'Barry

Richard O'Barry Instagram - Words of Wisdom From Joe Kleiman: “A few things greatly bother me. First, the media circus that surrounded Toki’s removal from the tank all the way through her departure was an embarrassment. And there was the rush to perform a necropsy. NOAA’s killer whale necropsy guidelines are designed for strandings, thus the rush. But that’s not the case here. I spent a number of years doing dolphin and whale necropsies. We had a huge freezer because you can wait a few days and weeks and still get the same results off a thawed body. There’s no reason she couldn’t have been placed in a refrigerated trailer right away and just kept there at the Seaquarium until the Lummi elders had arrived to pay their respects while she was still whole. It’s a continuing disrespect to Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut and her indigenous relatives from the park in both life and death. And by Eduardo Albor’s logic that he just bought the park and is therefore not responsible for her capture (and I have yet to see him apologize for it), the current ownership of SeaWorld holds no responsibility for what their predecessors did. Corporate responsibility is a real thing. You buy a company, you buy a park, you’re also responsible for the historical baggage you buy with it, regardless of whether your brand is SeaWorld or Seaquarium.”

Richard O'Barry Instagram - This is Worth Repeating: “You cannot heal in the same environment that made you sick”- (Unknown author)
This applies to captive dolphins too.🐬 🐬 🐬
The only way to heal captive dolphins is to first—empty the tanks—and remove them from the toxic environment that made them sick in the first place. Once they are relocated to natural seawater, and exposed to tides, currents, live fish and a more normal environment, the healing process can begin. Our job is to turn the dolphins over to Mother Nature and let her do her thing. And that’s exactly what we did with Johnny, Rocky and Rambo. And yes, of course there is more to it than that, which will be explained in detail later on. The important thing is the dolphins are now healed. Next step is to return them to their natural environment. We’re just waiting for government approval. (Photo by Gede)

Richard O'Barry Instagram - Taiji: We are still up against an appeal the town of Taiji made on a ruling by Wakayama District Court over the redaction of information from public documents (sales contracts, invoices, export documents, and inventories for live cetaceans). ⚠️ Your support is urgently needed to continue to legal front in Japan: https://bit.ly/48DZsXT — or go to DolphinProject.com to DONATE

The fight to abolish the defend Taiji’s dolphins and end the captive trade lies both in changing public opinion (both within Japan, and globally) and achieving favorable legal outcomes. Dolphin Project, along with its Japanese counterparts, believe these are the most productive and viable solutions. Together with Life Investigation Agency (LIA), Dolphin Project has several lawsuits in litigation in Japanese courts, in addition to this one.

Richard O'Barry Instagram - The CIA Once Wanted to Use Dolphins to Sink Enemy Ships: Back in 2019, the CIA released a trove of previously secret files that detail various undercover experiments, including the strange dolphin endeavor coined “Project OXYGAS.”

The year was 1963. The CIA sent an agent to Miami Seaquarium to spy on me while I was training Flipper for the upcoming television series. The CIA wanted to know how it was possible to train dolphins to do the things they were seeing in the movies. Especially underwater. He tried to recruit me into their “dolphins of war program.” Wanted me to come to work for them at their “Undersea Warfare School” at Point Magu Navy Base, California. What he showed me was pretty bizarre, morally repugnant and ethically untenable. I passed on the job. Stayed with the Flipper TV series and Hugo the killer whale at Miami Seaquarium. The “Dolphin of War” program was transferred away from the CIA to the US Navy—civilian contractors actually. It’s a “black budget” project. The cash 💰 flows to the civilian contractors and the details are top secret. No accountability. We the taxpayers pick up the tab for this abusive, cruel program. 13 dolphins were sent into action in Vietnam to participate in a “harbor defense unit.” I don’t believe any of the dolphins returned home from the war.

On June 17, our team was delighted to observe Rambo swimming with a small pod of wild bottlenose dolphins (three in total) near Menjangan Island, just west of the Umah Lumba Center. After this sighting, he was still seen daily in the national park.

Again, on July 19, at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time, Rambo left the bay he had called home since his confiscation. Later that day, Rambo was observed swimming with five bottlenose dolphins once again, near Menjangan Island. Since this last sighting, Rambo has not returned.

What a thrill. The bicycle tires and tubes were removed from the rims, and now the naked metal rims fit perfectly on a high wire. So, all Mai Li and I have to do is stay focused and well balanced while constantly peddling the bicycle across the high wire which is suspected 500 feet in the air across a spectacular valley of rice fields in Ubud,Bali. Richard O'Barry Instagram - Atlantis Resorts and Bahamas government ministers “rescued” the five survivors from Blackbeard Cay. It was a farce. They could have done the blood work, medical tests right there on Blackbeard Cay and eliminated the stress of the violent capture. An unnecessary transport by boat and truck followed. All of this added to the stress of “separation anxiety syndrome” when Luis Hernandez, the dolphins trainer of nine years was left behind. This was the first time they’ve ever been separated. Nobody at Atlantis actually knows these five dolphins like Luis. They never will—Luis was the dolphins security blanket. Two of the five dolphins are only two years old. The new rearranged social dynamics at Atlantis Resorts may now include separation from each other by dolphin trainers who can’t tell them apart. Atlantis didn’t even want the dolphins in the first place, in my opinion. The government orchestrated this unnecessary transport to take everybody’s attention off of Blackbeard Cay and the secret graveyard where eight bodies are buried. And to take media attention away from the fact that the Bahamas government was ordered by their own Supreme Court to remove the dolphins from Blackbeard Cay back in 2014. Ten Years Ago! The decision makers had plenty of time to create a proper sanctuary for the dolphins. That decision would’ve brought a windfall of positive international media attention to the beauty Bahamas Islands. But no…The government ignored the Supreme Court all of these years while eight dolphins died in their care. This little known fact is still being covered up by government spin doctors today. And that’s what killed the eight dolphins on Blackbeard Cay; ignoring the Supreme Court order, and treating it like it was just a “suggestion.” The press conference at Atlantis Resort will now allow government and Atlantis Resorts to control the narrative of this ongoing story. It’s a way to keep the Supreme Court order and Blackbeard Cay story out of sight and out of mind.

Richard O'Barry Instagram - UPDATE: Johnny’s Doing Great! Thankfully, there was no pain involved in this dental procedure. Our illustrious marine mammal veterinarian team drilled into a part of the tooth that no longer had nerve endings. X-rays were done beforehand to make sure Johnny’s teeth were suitable for this procedure, and that it would not be painful for him. He actually seemed to enjoy the interaction. Understandable too, as captivity is extremely boring. Yes, it’s a sanctuary but it is still captivity. Freedom is much more interesting.

Richard O'Barry Instagram - The Dolphin Song: “This old world may never change the way it's been
And all the ways of war can't change it back again
I've been a-searchin' for the dolphins in the sea
And sometimes I wonder, do you ever think of me
I'm not the one to tell this world how to get along
I only know that peace will come when all hate is gone
I've been a-searchin' for the dolphins in the sea
And sometimes I wonder, do you ever think of me.
Oh, sometimes I think about Saturday's child
And all about the times when we were running wild
I've been a-searching for the dolphins in the sea
And sometimes I wonder, do you ever think of me
Ah, this old world may never change
This world may never change
This world may never change”

Richard O'Barry Instagram - A new blog by Helene O’Barry on our website: DolphinProject.com It’s about a momma dolphin named Veera who was captured in Pine Island, Florida by Jay Sweeney and Dolphin Research Center (DRC). The dolphins were trucked from the capture site to DRC for training. They were being prepared for a job in show business. Eventually, Veera and the other victims were trafficked to Finland by Sweeney and DRC. We met Veera years earlier in Finland during a protest. Veera and I are both Floridians. In this video she is in a small stadium tank at the Attica Zoo in Greece—this was before she was shipped off to yet another concrete tank in Europe. Diehard dolphin trainer, Steve McCulloch of Dolphins Plus, a “swim with captive dolphins” tourist trap in Key Largo. McCulloch hauled the dolphins into Greece from Finland. My family and I were at the Attica Zoo attending meetings with the owners to discuss the possibility of creating a sanctuary in Crete, Greece for Veera and the others. And while we were trying to empty the tanks at the zoo and create a proper sanctuary, McCulloch was there earlier filling the same tanks with yet more captive dolphins. Back in the 1980’s Jay Sweeney and DRC worked together on capturing, selling, training and the trafficking of Florida dolphins to Europe. All of the original captive dolphins in Europe came from Florida or Cuba. These are warm water dolphins. Veera was eventually shipped out of the Attica Zoo, dragged kicking and screaming to yet another concrete tank, this time in Italy—separating mother and son forever. Veera died less than a year later in the last concrete tank that would hold her. Call me anthropomorphic, but I believe Verra died of a broken heart. 💔 Veera’s son is still in the Attica Zoo stadium preforming for tourists even though animal shows are banned in Greece. Veera should never have been separated from her child. Actually, she should never have been captured by DRC and Sweeney. Shame on Sweeney. Shame on DRC. Shame on the Attica Zoo. Shame on McCulloch, and all the sleazy dolphin dealers who fly under the radar while shuffling dolphins from tank to tank. #emptythetanksworldwide. *Helene’s BLOG at DolphinProject.com
Richard O'Barry Instagram - BREAKING: Wakayama District Court Judge rules in Life Investigation Agency’s favor. Huge victory! @Life_Investigation_Agency

WAKAYAMA, Wakayama Prefecture, September 29, 2023: In a ruling by Wakayama District Court Judge Ayako Takahashi, a decision made by the Town of Taiji not to disclose information relating to the dolphin drive hunts, has been deemed illegal.

On April 22, 2022, Ren Yabuki, Director of Life Investigation Agency, in conjunction with Dolphin Project filed a lawsuit against the Town of Taiji over the redaction of information from public documents related to the handling of cetaceans. The lawsuit sought access to all documentation connected to the drive hunts, including: sales contracts and invoices for live cetacean commerce
documents related to the overseas export of live cetaceans
complete inventories of cetaceans in possession of the Taiji Whale Museum
documentation related to the dismantling of dead cetaceans by the Taiji Whale Museum, and
inspection reports for the animals in possession by the Taiji Whale Museum This is a great victory for LIA’s work for cetaceans in Japan. We believe these documents will finally disprove Taiji’s claim that the hunts are all about culture and tradition, and instead, illustrate the truth that the hunts are undeniably, financially driven by the captivity industry. Richard O'Barry Instagram - The Greenwashing of Swimming and Fondling Captive Dolphins in a Shallow Water Canal in Key Largo: Dolphins Plus @dolphinsplus is one of several roadside captive dolphin swim programs in the Florida Keys. These attractions are the last remnants of the old time roadside animal shows in Florida. They used be strung out all along Highway A1A. Most of these animal attractions were abolished long ago. In order for the captive dolphin swim programs to survive they have to greenwash themselves as environmentally correct “Dolphin Rescuers.” Steve McCulloch is listed as “Executive Director” of Stranding Operations and Development. They respond to dolphin standings once in a blue moon. The photograph doesn’t lie; tourists on can fondle a dolphin for cash, credit card or check💰. He’s also associated with the Attica Zoo dolphin stadium in Greece. Steve trafficked the last group of dolphins into the zoos stadium from Finland. He’s filling the same tanks we’re trying to empty! Animal shows are banned in Greece, yet the show goes on in the Attica Zoo dolphin stadium. Steve is now involved in a project in Norway—buyer beware! Okay, back to #dolphinsplus—here is how they advertise one of their many dolphin swim products: “Private Group $325 per person.
“Connect to Protect” program,(#dpmmr) you will experience the same breathtaking moments that make up the “Connect to Protect” swim but with the privacy of having the entire facility to yourself. This small group experience is available for family and friend groups of up to 6 people and includes a private educational briefing before entering the dolphin habitat for a custom-tailored interaction program.” *Dolphins Plus are card carrying members of IMATA (International Marine Animal Trainers Association) and AMMPA (Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums) This is the dolphin captivity industry, folks. Wake up! Don’t be fooled. And please DON’T BUY A TICKET for any captive dolphin interactive program. “Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Rescue” actually spends most of their time doing this: #dpmmr —The photos don’t lie. Richard O'Barry Instagram - Taiji: Cove Monitor Russ is in Taiji and documented a gruesome striped dolphin slaughter today. 14 beautiful dolphins including 1 juvenile were driven into the Cove. While trapped and being pushed towards the killing area, the dolphins panicked. Several were trapped in the nets as they desperately tried to escape. One bleeding profusely while struggling. When the divers finally came to untangle the dolphins, they escorted them under the tarps to be brutally slaughtered. The entire pod was slaughtered, tossed into skiffs and carried to the butcher house. A very sad and brutal day. February 7, 2024

Richard O'Barry Instagram - The TUNA KING: I hate writing and posting this stuff, but someone’s gotta do it because the Animal Welfare Industry does not police itself. That’s a fact. Same with the Dolphin Abusement Park Industry. Both industries are corrupted from the top down and from the bottom up because they don’t police themselves! This is my honest opinion having worked in both industries for many years. It’s all about members, money and goals of the highest abstraction. This has to CHANGE! So what can you do about this? You can stop buying and selling so-called “dolphin-safe” tuna. This clever money making scheme continues to kill both dolphins and tuna, and also the BYCATCH: turtles, rays, whales, sharks and many other species of marine life. So why is Dave Phillips still defending this bloody practice? Is he laughing all the way to the bank, or what? It makes no sense to keep lying about something that is so obvious to the educated consumer, but apparently not to Dave’s Board of Directors, they just look the other way. This post is for them. Does the guy behind the curtain receive money from the multi-billion dollar fishing industry for each can of tuna sold? He’s the Treasurer of EII and WSP. If you want to know you can ask Dave directly using my stolen URL. And also ask him why he has not returned the hijacked URL:DolphinProject.org I did not give it to him. I did not sell it. Dave figured out a clever way to hijack it when I resigned from Earth Island Institute. My original URL is still being used on his website to trick potential donors into thinking they are supporting me. I quit Earth Island Institute in order to protect myself and the original Dolphin Project from being associated with corruption. You can contact Dave directly using my stolen website. I can’t do that myself, the crooks locked me out when I quit. And good luck trying to get a straight answer from Dave Phillips, or even getting through to him. He’s usually hiding under his desk during times of scrutiny.

Richard O'Barry Instagram - THE SMOKING GUN: The eight dolphin who were put in the ground on Blackbeard Cay had a miserable life and then they died—right under the nose of the Alliance of Marine Parks and Aquariums (AMPAA) And the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) There are dozens of dolphin trainers, veterinarians, ticket takers, spin doctors, and corporate whores who are part of this dolphin captivity industry in the Bahamas Islands. These people knew, or should have known, about the secret dolphin graveyard on Blackbeard Cay. Dolphin Project shouldn’t have to inform them. So they knew. And yet they did nothing to help those that died, or the five survivors. Not one of them had the decency, or guts to blow the whistle on their own industry. Dolphin Project had to blow the whistle for them. Their industry displays the same apathetic behavior at the cove in Taiji, Japan; dolphin trainers turning a blind eye on their colleagues who participate in the violent capture of dolphins. Do we need more proof that this multi-billion dollar industry does not police itself? It is indeed an industry of hypocrisy and lies.

Richard O'Barry Instagram - BREAKING: Osaka, 5/17/24: Despite an appeal filed last year by the town of Taiji, the Osaka High Court ruled on May 17, 2024 that the town’s decision to redact its public records is illegal.

This stunning verdict represents a huge victory for cetacean activists worldwide, as critical information regarding the drive hunts and Taiji’s captive dolphin trade has been previously inaccessible. Over the last 14 years, much misinformation has been circulating, leading to speculations based on false data. Now, with the reveal of this data, a much more factual perspective can be made, and the legality of these hunts can be properly investigated.

“This Osaka High Court’s decision is a landmark precedent in that it strictly interpreted the requirements for nondisclosure on the grounds of the interests of businesses that deal with public entities, and placed a heavy burden of proof on the administrative side to allow such nondisclosure.” ~ Takashi Takano, attorney for Dolphin Project and Life Investigation Agency.

Did you know that more than half of the earth’s oxygen is produced by organisms in the ocean?
The world’s oceans are full of incredible and important life. Saving dolphins and whales is about more than simply ending the captivity trade. Ocean conservation is also vital to the survival of all cetaceans, and other marine wildlife. In order to protect wild populations and return captive marine mammals to the ocean sanctuaries and/or their home range, we must ensure a safe and clean habitat. Great Respect for Mister Gilmore. He’s a Real Environmental Activist/Hero: David Gilmour, the iconic guitarist and vocalist of Pink Floyd, is known not just for his musical talents but also for his philanthropy. One interesting fact is that in 2019, Gilmour auctioned off more than 120 guitars from his personal collection and raised $21.5 million. He donated the entire proceeds to ClientEarth, a charity that fights climate change. This auction included the sale of his legendary Black Strat, which alone fetched nearly $4 million, making it one of the most expensive guitars ever sold at auction.

They were looking for trouble. Had the police not been there to intervene, violence would have erupted. The racists punks were very aggressive, loud and nasty. When several of them pushed their way through the crowd to get to me the National Police held them back. One particular person who is associated with the police, and is someone that I have been dealing with for several years, called me aside in the parking lot and gave me a replica of the police car I was arrested in. How cool is that? 👮‍♀️ He can’t be identified for obvious reasons. He will see this post. I just wanted him and all of the other police officers to know we appreciate them keeping everyone safe while we activists do what we gotta do. The cops aren’t the bad guys, they’re just doing their job, following orders, paying the rent like everyone else. No hard feelings. This act of kindness represents common ground and HOPE.

These three Japanese revolutionaries made history when they connected up with the “Rolling Coconut Review.” We went from the Coconut Grove Playhouse to the Haromi Dome in Tokyo in 1977 to preform with the leading Japanese artists. Before this date in time, Japanese musicians only opened for Westerners. A kind of musical segregation. Working together we changed that.

In September 2018, Morgan gave birth to a daughter, named Ula, but the calf died just short of her third birthday in August 2021. *Visit www.DolphinProject.com to learn more about Morgan’s sad life at Loro Parque.* Image by Helene O’Barry #emptythetanks

And yes, we have a safety cable attached. Bicycle riding in the sky, what could be better? (Video by Helene O’Barry)

Richard O'Barry - 0.9K Likes - Atlantis Resorts and Bahamas government ministers “rescued” the five survivors from Blackbeard Cay.

Caption : Atlantis Resorts and Bahamas government ministers “rescued” the five survivors from Blackbeard Cay. (Photo by reEarth)

Richard O'Barry - 899 Likes - UPDATE: Johnny’s Doing Great!

Richard O'Barry - 841 Likes - A new blog by Helene O’Barry on our website: DolphinProject.com It’s about a momma dolphin named Veera who was captured in Pine Island, Florida by Jay Sweeney and Dolphin Research Center (DRC).

When the divers finally came to untangle the dolphins, they escorted them under the tarps to be brutally slaughtered. My intention was to join them for this protest, unfortunately I’m not able to travel again until I get a much needed COVID🦠 booster shot. Boudwijn is the last dolphin Abusement park left in Belgium. It will fall if enough people show up to help BiteBack with the protest. I’ll be joining them later on when it’s safe for me to travel again. I quit Earth Island Institute in order to protect myself and the original Dolphin Project from being associated with corruption. You can contact Dave directly using my stolen website. Richard O'Barry - 670 Likes - THE SMOKING GUN: The eight dolphin who were put in the ground on Blackbeard Cay had a miserable life and then they died—right under the nose of the Alliance of Marine Parks and Aquariums (AMPAA) And the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) There are dozens of dolphin trainers, veterinarians, ticket takers, spin doctors, and corporate whores who are part of this dolphin captivity industry in the Bahamas Islands.

Caption : THE SMOKING GUN: The eight dolphin who were put in the ground on Blackbeard Cay had a miserable life and then they died—right under the nose of the Alliance of Marine Parks and Aquariums (AMPAA) And the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) There are dozens of dolphin trainers, veterinarians, ticket takers, spin doctors, and corporate whores who are part of this dolphin captivity industry in the Bahamas Islands.

Richard O'Barry - 625 Likes - BREAKING: Osaka, 5/17/24: Despite an appeal filed last year by the town of Taiji, the Osaka High Court ruled on May 17, 2024 that the town’s decision to redact its public records is illegal.

If passed, the SWIMS Act would amend the USA's Marine Mammal Protection Act to include a ban on taking, importing, or exporting orcas, beluga whales, pilot whales, and false killer whales for public display. It would also amend the Animal Welfare Act to ban the breeding of those species for public display!
We'll be sure to post updates!

Richard O'Barry - 518 Likes - Yesterday in Tokyo, Japan. September 3, 2023. Dolphin Project Concert Committee Office: Mostly an archives now. Plenty of memories here of those early days when we were young and strong and running wild. Left to right: Masatoshi Iwanagi, Ric O’Barry, Mr. Suzuki and Hiroshi Asada. Finally, Japanese and Westerners played together on the same stage for the first time. Our event was called: “Japan Celebrates the Whale and Dolphin.” It was produced by Dolphin Project USA and Dolphin Project Japan.

Step 3: Release
