Sophie Auster - 1.3K Likes - Balance. This is the question I got asked the most after reaching out to all of you the other week, here, on Instagram. How do I navigate a creative life with a new baby? How do I make it work? How do I find “the balance”?Considering it took me over a week to post this, I’m guessing I’m a work in progress and the jury is still out on my “balance”.
For over a year my family and I have been living in, what my mother calls, cancer land. Like so many who have experienced cancer or been close to cancer, it is hard to catch your breath. The world becomes small. We try to focus on the here and now and trivial concerns, for the most part, go away. Being pregnant and having my Dad in the hospital undergoing a myriad of treatments to treat the cancer and then treat the side effects of the treatments, was scary and lonely. And, it is not over. We are still holding our breath’s.
During the pandemic I used this platform to feel connected. It filled my cup because I felt part of a community. But, after our family’s personal tragedy, my Dad’s cancer diagnosis and my pregnancy, I became burnt out on social media and withdrew. I’m not a person who likes to share my grief publicly. Now that Miles is here and I am in the last stages of recording my album, I do have a sense of urgency to return to this community- to feel connected again. You will never get parenting advice from me here. I don’t believe in it. All families and babies are different and what works for one, doesn’t work for another. I will, however, offer support and I will gladly answer questions if you want to ask them. So, to answer, and not answer the question of balance: everyday is a balancing act. There are days when I can scurry around and do what I have to do. There are days when Miles will sleep on my lap while I record. There are other days when he refuses to be put down and I have to drop everything and tend to his needs. But, music has always been cathartic for me. This new album is deeply personal and writing it helped me through my grief. It is my medicine. Today and everyday I will keep dancing the tightrope of motherhood and my music dreams and keep crossing my fingers for the best.

A punto de publicar nuevo disco y de ser madre por primera vez, la cantante encuentra la inspiración en la ciudad inmortalizada por sus padres, los escritores Paul Auster y Siri Hustvedt. “Creo que este disco es el más personal que he escrito, porque surge del confinamiento y de conflictos personales vividos en los últimos años”, explica Sophie.

Los problemas a los que alude son la muerte por sobredosis de su hermano Daniel en abril del año pasado, menos de dos semanas después de ser acusado del homicidio de su hija de 10 meses, y el cáncer diagnosticado en diciembre a su padre. El título de su nuevo trabajo evoca un efecto catártico, Milk for Ulcers [leche para las úlceras]. “Es un álbum que refleja la superación de obstáculos y eso me ha dado un gran margen de maniobra para crear un arco narrativo y dar un giro a la pena que sentía hacia temas que plasman que estoy sobrellevándola. Escribir desde el dolor me ha ayudado a sanar las heridas abiertas”.
