Tej Lalvani Instagram - I spent the majority of my childhood between India and the UK, and whilst growing up in a multicultural background had its challenges… I still view it as the greatest gift I could have ever been given. From a young age, it instilled in me a deep appreciation of inclusivity and open-mindedness. I always noticed when someone went the extra mile to make me feel included and valued, or when they showed a genuine interest in my perspective on things. These were often just small exchanges, the likes of which I am sure most people wouldn’t even remember – but each one undoubtedly shaped my perspective on the type of leader that I would want to be someday. Tej Lalvani Instagram - When I first started at @vitabiotics, I was seen as young and inexperienced – and in retrospect, I was. I didn’t know the ins and outs of running a business. I didn’t know what it took to manage people. I didn’t know how to manage people effectively. I didn’t know what the business was doing effectively, and where there were areas for improvement. So – I decided to get stuck in, and learn. I worked my way through nearly every department – even operating forklifts for a while. I got to know the everyday requirements, team culture, and operational side of the business inside and out, eventually becoming COO before taking over the role of CEO. Is this the conventional route to leadership? Probably not. But was it the one that allowed me to gain the greatest understanding of what the business needs to continue running successfully? Absolutely. And I am forever grateful for it.

Growing up as an immigrant is a journey of innovation and adaptation in a system that is not quite designed for you. You have to bend and mould yourself to fit through hoops that were expecting someone else, constantly feeling like you have something to prove. At the same time, immigration and the desire for a better life so regularly go hand-in-hand. You learn very early on to make the most of every single opportunity offered to you, viewing success and self-betterment as a non-negotiable. There is a huge amount of resilience, drive, and work ethic that you gain from growing up as an immigrant – all of which are key components of being a successful entrepreneur. So no, I don’t think this is a coincidence. I think it’s a testament to the power of the human spirit.

Recognising that situations are often far more complex than they seem has been eye-opening. Of course, there is a time and a place for this – I’m not suggesting that you turn a blind eye to anything, or start acting as a doormat. I didn’t know what it took to manage people. I didn’t know how to manage people effectively. I didn’t know what the business was doing effectively, and where there were areas for improvement. So – I decided to get stuck in, and learn. I worked my way through nearly every department – even operating forklifts for a while. I got to know the everyday requirements, team culture, and operational side of the business inside and out, eventually becoming COO before taking over the role of CEO. Is this the conventional route to leadership? Probably not. But was it the one that allowed me to gain the greatest understanding of what the business needs to continue running successfully? Absolutely. And I am forever grateful for it.

Growing up as an immigrant is a journey of innovation and adaptation in a system that is not quite designed for you. You have to bend and mould yourself to fit through hoops that were expecting someone else, constantly feeling like you have something to prove. At the same time, immigration and the desire for a better life so regularly go hand-in-hand. You learn very early on to make the most of every single opportunity offered to you, viewing success and self-betterment as a non-negotiable. There is a huge amount of resilience, drive, and work ethic that you gain from growing up as an immigrant – all of which are key components of being a successful entrepreneur. So no, I don’t think this is a coincidence. I think it’s a testament to the power of the human spirit.
