Varun Grover Instagram - 1st July 2004. Exactly twenty years ago, I moved to Mumbai with the dream of becoming a writer. Zero connections, zero formal training, very little knowledge of good world cinema (the best films I had seen till then were The Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Katha, and Appu Raja - all of them i still love but i didn’t know ki duniya mein iss-se better films bhi hoti hain), not much knowledge of even the basic craft of writing, and very little savings (though of course my privilege was a huge safety net).

I often think that if I had known how tough this city - and this industry- are, I’d have probably never moved. The constant exploitation, almost as a compulsion even when they could get work done without exploiting or manipulating, and lack of respect for writers came as a shock to me but at the same time, kindness and support of many people (starting with my first writing partner and friend in the city @randomiya - a treasure of a person), the team and crew of my THE GREAT INDIAN COMEDY SHOW (@shashantshah, @pathakvinay, @amitvmasurkar, @lordmenon, and show’s creative head Sailesh Dave plus many others) kept me going. Over time, many more artistic voices I respected and loved allowed me to collab and play (starting with the man who taught me to be brave - @anuragkashyap10 - and then a long list of names who inspired me to be honest and authentic - @neeraj.ghaywan, @snekhanwalkar, @anubhuti_k, @motwayne, @sylvesterfonseca, @vasanbala, @sharatkatariya, @rkrkay, @therichachadha, @iamhumaq, @swapsagram, @anvita_dee, @itsamittrivedi, @avinasharundhaware, @jaideepahlawat and many more.).

And then i recently got to make and release my first feature film ALL INDIA RANK thanks to fantastic producers in @matchboxshots with @pratikmr and @vishal_bajaj_1603 as EPs and a team full of so many talented first timers.

Varun Grover Instagram - Apne dost ki picture aa rahi hain 😊

@vidushak 's film #AllIndiaRank is a few weeks away. Right after watching the film, I was silent. It felt too personal. It was like scenes from my childhood playing out on the big screen. Emotions that have been too far repressed have been ripped out and posted too publicly. And even though I've never been to IIT or come from a small town, the time it's set in was a time I know only too well - the 90s in India. It's a gentle whisper in times of loud and angsty men on screen. Delicate nibbed ink pens placed in front of heavy duty guns. Roses on rocks. This is the feeling the film leaves you with. It's important to understand this film in the context of what's being dished out in our times.

Varun Grover - 19.1K Likes - Varun Grover is one of the most talented people I know … He wrote Kaala Re and Moora in Gangs of Wasseypur. The first two songs I performed to on screen in my film career.

And recently he wrote Ye Ik Zindagi Kaafi Nahin Hai for Monica O My Darling - where I had the most fun jiving as Monica.

We go back a long way (we met at the first narration of Gangs of Wasseypur at Anurag Kashyap’s house in 2010 i think) and we will go forward a long way too. Insha Allah

And today I am so happy to be sharing his first song from his first film as a director - Sab achhi baatein hain from All India Rank. A fun song for hostel night outs.

Varun Grover - 18.2K Likes - Got super busy right after this day (as my standup solo India tour ended and @allindiarankmovie promotions began) but this day in Kolkata was the most joy-filled core memory of recent times. Spent a day in awe of the love for food and stories (and stories told through food) cooked by @bongeats (Insiya and Saptarshi). @sreemoyee.singh joined us for the relaxed, wholesome winter lunch - and WHAT A LUNCH it was!

1. Insiyar Sansar.

2. Aamudi fish bhaaja being finished by Saptarshi while Insiya tempers the silent-rockstar of the meal, Masur Daal.

3. The table being laid. Narkel Bora, Pepe Shukto (Shukto made with Raw Papaya) Aamudi bhaaja, Pabda’r Tel Jhol, and inside the box - the most royal Chitol Machher Muitha.

4. A closer look at Pabda’r Tel Jhol, with the most delicate-crunchy boris on top. Teasing from the corner in the back, the palette cleanser Imli Chutney/Jhol.

5. Saptarshi brings in the daal.

6. Bong Eats before they eat.

7. The assorted mishti spread from assorted legendary shops around.

8. We also realised that Insiya and I share our birth date (26th January) and just by chance, Sreemoyee had brought a freshly baked, very unique Pear cake. So of course we cut it on this day, 27th January.

9. Filmmaker and singer @sreemoyee.singh, Insiya, Saptarshi, and I with - happy food-coma glow binding us together.
