I am humbled to accept the inaugural NSW Council for Civil Liberties President’s award for journalism. It is an honour to be acknowledged for my battle to uphold journalism without fear or favour, it’s been a very difficult year given the bullying and silencing of journalists in Australia. I dedicate this award to the journalists who have been murdered doing their jobs. Journalism is not a crime. Systematically killing journalists is a war crime. Gaza is the deadliest place to be a journalist. The past 10 months have been the deadliest period to be a journalist. This award is for the Palestinian journalists who no longer have breath, let alone a voice. Swipe to read my acceptance speech and see the names and faces of the journalists slain.

Jayson Gillham. The internationally acclaimed pianist whose show was cancelled by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra after he dedicated a song called ‘Witness’ to the 113 Palestinian journalists killed by the Israeli Defence Force is my guest on the @thebriefingpodcast. @jaysongillham and I discuss how the ongoing atrocities committed against Palestinians made him consider giving up music, the role of art in politics, why he’s now taking legal action … plus MSO’s aggressive backflip after initially agreeing to an apology. Chat drops 6am Tuesday on The Briefing.

No this is not a picture with my cousins at an engagement party, it’s the SOFRA Lebanese cook book launch event! This beautiful book is the brainchild of the brilliant mother daughter duo behind @sundaykitchenau. Naturally @karimachloehazim and @sivinetabbouch cooked the most delicious food for their guests at @artgalleryofnsw. So many people came together to celebrate this book which is as much about the preservation of culture and community as it is about cooking. SOFRA comes from an Arabic word meaning picnic, or dining table, but perhaps more important than the literal translation, Sofra suggests generosity and hospitality. Shoutout to book industry stalwart @cherylakle from @betterreadingau for moderating such a wonderful chat with the authors. And I spotted chef extraordinaire @kylie_kwong and papped her and then tripped before I could introduce myself … because that’s how clumsy fans roll.

It’s my birthday! When I blow out my candles this year and make a wish … what should I wish for?
Introducing our September model, @antoinette_lattouf 🧡 Antoinette Lattouf is a multi-award-winning journalist, columnist, author, TED X speaker, human rights advocate, and mental health ambassador. She is the co-founder of Media Diversity Australia and the co-host of The Antoinettes podcast. ‘Violence against women is being live streamed on our phones from Gaza. Closer to home, we’re witnessing another epidemic and are struggling to shift the conversation into meaningful action. Projects like this continue to bring intersectional feminism to the forefront. When we think about violence against women, we’re often not thinking about all the women and girls who experience it around the globe, let alone those on our shores. I’m doing this for my two daughters, who I’m proud to see evolving into clever feminists – but I’m also acutely aware that they will have to go out into a world that isn’t designed to protect them. I have an enormous responsibility.’ All profits from the #LetsGetExplicit calendar go towards GIVIT’s Domestic and Family Violence Appeal.

As queer Australians demand being counted, in true Olympic spirit, Prime Minister Albanese has performed massive backflips over what will be asked in the next Census. Now some LGBTQI people will be included in the census — but not all. One Antoinette unpacks why sex and gender identity need to be accurately measured and welcomes the move. The other is not impressed and doesn’t think counting changes anything. The Antoinettes also explore why Australia still lags when it comes to measuring the ethnic and racial makeup of the country.
