They taught me n my brother the true definition of love for each other and for the country. My mother insisted on spending the last few days of her life at the military command hospital in Lucknow where they first met, until my brother n I moved her to Sahara Sheher to breath her last surrounded by family…. Children can carry burden of irresponsible people’s words all their lives … My paternal grandparents दादी-दादा were settled in #jalandhar once on a trip there I overheard some relative telling my Dadi something on the lines of: ਉਹ ਲਗਭਗ ਬਦਸੂਰਤ ਹੈI Uha lagabhaga badasūrata hai.. She is almost u#ly … But my Dadi told that lady “Don’t hate what you don’t understand.”…. She hugged me later and gave me a hot roti with Ghee-sugar and told me Lōkāṁ dī gala nā suṇō uha bēsamajha hana, ( don’t listen to people who are ignorant) but I still couldn’t understand the snide remarks as a child. “Mixed breed hound” “Afghan hound” was used often in school and even when I started modelling at the age of 15. Why were they so full of scornful sarcasm towards me …. because when I looked at my parents I saw nothing wrong between them, all I saw was love. There were also people who applauded and praised the union of my parents but it was the hurt from the hatred which remained deeply rooted within me. #engagementanniversary 14 years ago today @haag.peter flew down to #mumbai for 8 hours only ( he had an important meeting the next day) to meet my father and mother. I did not know he asked for their permission to propose to me… That very same night before departure he proposed to me with a ring at the @itcmaratha BOMBAY HIGH at 8.10 PM in evening, the very same spot where my mother had told me two years before as I sat broken hearted with her talking about my fears of not meeting the “one”. She had predicted at the very same spot, on the very same sofa that Peter proposed to me on that : “The wrong one will find you in peace and leave you in pieces, but the right one will find you in pieces and lead you to peace.” Today 14 years later after many high’s and many many lows we look back together on all the things that we were destined to endure.
