Once upon a time, in the year of our Goddess -1982 – two little girls were born in the same week, but on opposite sides of the world. These little nerds loved school and books and camp and extracurricular activities to pad their college resumes….and they were the same kind of animal. Ambitious. Persistent. LOUD. Dramatic. But they were also a marriage of opposites. Dark and blonde. Petite and tall. California and Virginia. All girls school and public school. If there was ever a case of Nature vs Nurture, this was it. The older one looked mean and angular and tough. But was a wuss on the inside. Easily hurt. The younger one looked adorable on the outside. But was a fucking pit bull! Especially if you tangled with one of her chosen family. And so it came to pass that the Universe, in all her infinite wisdom, threw these two together and created a perfect storm of sisterhood and feminine rage and salacious gossip and soft, loving trust. It was perfect. You, @sophiabush , are perfect. I always feel guilty that my birthday comes first, and you always take the time to make me feel so loved. One year we’ll manipulate the calendar so you can go first! For your birthday, I give you gratitude. Thank you for always seeing the deep down me, and protecting her. Even when we were kids you saw through the bullshit. It’s your gift. Clarity. Thank you for all the generosity and silliness and partnership. Everything you touch ends up better. Shinier. Happier. Feels like a good day to celebrate the hardworking folks out there fighting for justice. For my birthday on Monday, I’d asked for help raising money for the @tninnocence. I didn’t sleep at all Monday night. Left the house at 3:30 am to get to the airport. Caught a 5am flight. Landed in Nashville where @lizzy5445 picked me up, and we headed straight to Cookeville, where Greg Lance’s whole family had gathered. July 2nd was the day we’d been waiting for……for years. It was so nice to be with them, and nicer still to finally be with @rabiasquared2 in person! Rabia is who first introduced me to Greg’s wrongful conviction through her @undisclosedpodcast . She is goodness and tenacity and grace personified. Getting to watch @tninnocence and attorneys from @bassberrysims was such a powerful experience. Did I cry? Yes. They so thoughtfully laid out proof of Greg’s innocence. They anticipated every objection and had case law and clarifications ready to go. They operated with such passion and care. We heard from relatives and close confidants of the actual killers, all putting themselves at risk to defend Greg’s innocence. And we heard from forensic experts that could find no link between Greg and the murder weapon. It was a hot, emotional, hopeful day. And at the end, the judge commended Greg on how caring and devoted his whole circle was, and what a brilliant job this legal team did. Then I got to go eat birthday cake with @rabiaandellyn , who are dangerously fun! Make sure you tune into their podcast! It wasn’t until I got home yesterday that I saw we had blown past the initial fundraising goal of 1k for the @tninnocence . As of today, the 4th of July, you all have so generously raised over $3,000! These are fund that will go towards future fights for justice and freedom. A very happy #4thofjuly to all of you who contributed to this cause. I know we are going to bring Greg home. I believe in that truth. I hope we continue to work together to bring more innocent people home, and in the process, raise awareness as to how we can continually improve our judicial system. So, there’s a very specific kind of 90s girl who thrifted her way through high school and found herself in Fiona Apple songs and movies like The Craft and Girl, Interrupted (i was obsessed. I literally took this movie poster to college so people would “understand” me. Ha). Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” sat on our nightstands. We ran to NYC as soon as we could, creating memories laced with cigarettes and sketchy late nights. And female friendships were sacred sisterhoods. I am said girl. Perhaps you are too. Well, now that we are adults, we have @annamtendler to thank for summoning all of us messy, emotional, justifiably angry, artsy girls together with the release of her memoir – #menhavecalledhercrazy . I devoured this in a day. I applaud her for her bravery in writing this book. I have been a fan of her art, her lampshades and photography for years because I love women who can infuse mystery and beauty into the world. She does that. So order this book now! Make it a bestseller! It’s always kinda strange and moving when people tell me they recognize themselves in my books, but I just had that experience myself and it’s wild! The magic of books abounds!
