Satedra Smith of Chattanooga, Tennessee is this week’s #WomenCrushWednesday. A fervent advocate for gun violence prevention, Satedra is a fellow with the @Everytown Survivor Network and has been a volunteer with @MomsDemand for eight years. Satedra’s life has been impacted by gun violence several times, from her grandfather’s shooting death when she was twelve to narrowly surviving an unintentional shooting years later that caused her internal bleeding, weakened muscles, and ongoing trauma. Tragedy struck again in 2015 when Satedra’s son, Jordan Clark, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Chattanooga; this Sunday marks nine years since his passing. And just eight months ago, another one of Satedra’s sons, Joshua Smith, was taken by senseless gun violence in Atlanta. “There is no way to fully heal from the death of a child,” Satedra shares. “The pain will always be there, and you will always feel the weight of your child’s absence.” In the face of unspeakable pain, Satedra has proven her strength time and time again. She founded Jordan’s Light Foundation—named in honor of her son—to promote healing for survivors of gun violence by providing a safe place for care. She continues this support by sharing her story to inspire action and communicate to other survivors an essential message: They are not alone in their grief. She also advocates tirelessly for gun safety laws and even trained to run for office and work on electoral campaigns. Last year, she was honored by the NAACP for her outstanding civic engagement. From advocating at the state capitol to hosting community events, Satedra is an unstoppable force in the gun violence prevention movement. Satedra has dedicated her life to ending gun violence in the names of her sons: “I advocate not because I want to—but because I have to, and to make sure other mothers do not have to experience the pain that I’ve endured. Whether it’s one son, two sons, three sons or four sons, or daughters, there are so many other people that I know my story will resonate with.” Thank you, Satedra, for your selfless resilience, and all that you do to save our children’s lives. #wcw
My #WomenCrushWednesday this week is Tracy Sexton of Pascagoula, Mississippi, a volunteer with @MomsDemand and a fellow with the @Everytown Survivor Network. When Tracy was just two-years-old, her mother, Alice Jo Floyd Sexton, died by gun suicide. Tracy learned later that her mother struggled with alcoholism and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. When she joined @MomsDemand as an adult, Tracy sought to bring awareness about the critical importance of gun safety—especially as it relates to those going through crises. She shares, “I joined to bring awareness about mental illness and how access to a gun can be the difference between life and death in a moment of crisis.” Today, Tracy is a trailblazer in her local @MomDemand group, spreading the message of gun safety and suicide prevention throughout her entire community. While the U.S. doesn’t have a higher rate of people with mental health challenges than other high income countries, we do have a gun suicide rate that’s nearly twelve times that of other high-income countries. We also know that people who live in states with high rates of household gun ownership are also almost four times more likely to die by gun suicide than those in states where fewer households have guns. But there is hope—these tragedies can often be prevented, and one of the most effective life-saving interventions for someone in crisis is disrupting their access to a gun. This #SuicidePreventionAwarenessMonth, join me in advocating for the proven solutions to this public health crisis—including Extreme Risk laws, waiting periods, secure storage of firearms, and increased access to mental health and medical services—and amplifying the voices of survivors of suicide loss like Tracy. If you or someone you love is struggling, there is help: The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7 connection to free, confidential support in the U.S. Call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.

My #WomenCrushWednesday this week is @skaufman121 of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. After working for thirteen years as a teacher and school administrator, Susie turned her focus toward community organizing and activism and began volunteering with @MomsDemand. Today, she leads their Minnesota chapter and fights for gun safety throughout the state. As a volunteer, Susie helps to elect Gun Sense Candidates, or candidates who have committed to govern with gun safety top of mind. Her work was instrumental during the 2022 elections, in flipping the Minnesota State Senate–creating a gun sense majority in all three chambers of the state government. With this new majority, Susie, along with other partners and volunteers, began advocating for critical gun safety legislation, including closing a dangerous background check loophole, an Extreme Risk law to limit firearm access by individuals in crisis, expanding access to community violence intervention funding, and restricting the use of no knock search warrants. As a result of her efforts, combined with the collective efforts of survivors and gun safety advocates, Minnesota Governor and Vice President Harris’ running mate Tim Walz signed into law a public safety bill addressing every one of those life-saving measures. But Susie’s work didn’t stop there. This year, she led her fellow @MomsDemand volunteers to push for even more common sense gun safety legislation in the state, including a law banning binary triggers—a modification that allows a semi-automatic firearm to fire two rounds for each action of the trigger, doubling the firing capacity. Thanks again to her efforts, that measure also passed the Minnesota legislature and was signed into law by Governor Walz earlier this year. When asked about her tireless advocacy, Susie shares, “I work in this movement because I want my daughters to be safe when they go to school or hang out with their friends. I want them to know I did everything in my power to elect Gun Sense Candidates and to advocate for laws that will help make our country safer.” Thank you, Susie, for making our country safer.
