This Saturday is my dad’s first art show in 35 years. He crated out over 70 pieces in a van and drove it solo from Colorado to Los Angeles. I was born 35 years ago. At the time he had a pretty cool career in New York City. He was a freelance illustrator for New York Magazine and he’d just won a Desy award. He didn’t think raising a kid in the lower east side and living the life of an artist stable enough, so he traded in his potential career and moved to Colorado with my mom. From then on his art became closeted. He would spend hours in his studio working. Every month or so a new piece would come up and be hung on a wall in the house. Our three bedroom became a gallery of sorts- piece upon piece lining every inch of real estate. But he never brought his work outside of our house. He got a job at the Denver Art Museum as an exhibition specialist and spent 28 years handling other artist’s work- Hirst and Ruscha, Pollock and Vermeer. He had a reputation at work of having to get things done right. There was a relentlessness to the consistency of this mission. He cared deeply about protecting and showcasing the work in a way that had the utmost integrity. He wanted the artists to feel safe with him. Meanwhile he worked privately at home with an audience of our four family members. I saw him exploring big ideas through his art- sifting through his neurosis and strengths and shortcomings, his joys and his mortality. As I’m about two months away from delivering my daughter, the beauty of this moment is not lost on me. My dad, after raising two kids to adulthood and retiring, is facing his anxieties and stepping into a very different version of his career than I’m sure he dreamt he would have back in his twenties, before he knew I was coming. The sacrifices he made aren’t lost on me. The sacrifices all parents make. The compromises to their dreams, to their sense of self and identity in exchange for the experience of raising a child. I’m so proud of my dad for putting himself out there in this way at 72. If you can make it to his show in LA next Saturday I hope to see you!
