Nandita Das Instagram – Today Aruna di is no more. A big loss to me, my family and to every person whose life she touched. Many would know her as the “Mother of Asian Cinema”. She is the one who started the Osian Cinefan Film Festival in Delhi, brought out the wonderful magazine ‘Cinemaya’ and even made documentaries. She was also the director of the Film Festival on Art and Artists that my father started in Odisha.
But more importantly, she was a special person. Spirited, warm, affectionate…who loved people, art, cinema and lived life to the fullest. I will miss her raspy voice, loving hugs and conversations about anything and everything. Though she was a friend of my parents, I was just as close to her. My father and she shared a very deep camaraderie and always cared about each other’s well being. If I had to wish for a friendship, that’s the kind I would wish for.
There was no one like her. I know I am not alone in grieving and celebrating her life. Big hug to them all as we bid goodbye to our favourite Aruna di.
PS. I realise how few photos we take when we are actually living fully! Will try to remember to take more with people I love and want to cherish always.
