Race Wong Instagram – THE MAASAI GIRLS
Maasai children in Tanzania face unique educational challenges due to their pastoralist lifestyle, which values herding over formal schooling. Despite juggling studies with responsibilities like cattle herding, many demonstrate remarkable determination and ambitions for education. Schools in these regions often lack resources and trained teachers, but efforts are ongoing to enhance education quality and accessibility.
During our visit to a Maasai girls’ school, we witnessed their resilience in overcoming obstacles like early marriages and domestic duties. These girls handle various tasks, such as building huts, fetching water from distant sources, childcare, cooking, and herding animals. By supporting initiatives for girls’ education, we can empower them to instigate positive change locally and beyond, breaking the poverty cycle and unlocking their potential.
Due to limited water availability and cold weather, the young girls are unable to grow their hair long. This is to prevent hair bugs as they are unable to shower for weeks.
@drderekbaram took the chance to show them our place of origin by indicating it on the world map on the wall.
PS: Noticing their stunningly white teeth 🦷, I inquired about their dental care routine. To my surprise, they mentioned they have never consumed sugar in their lives.
