“This cover collaboration with Rebecca Hall marks the first time we featured our subject’s own artwork. The artist has sensitivity to composition, color, and texture. Her bold brushstrokes and delicately painted fine lines come together to reveal that she has been privately painting for years. Her canvases are imbued with emotion and balance stillness with movement evoking feelings of isolation, awe, contemplation, and wonder. Rebecca wanted the artwork to stand alone, reflecting her desire to finally explore and share this side of herself with the public. This opportunity allows our readers to experience her art in a fresh and impactful way. My role was to photograph Rebecca with careful attention to her work. The photographs needed to complement her paintings without mimicking, overshadowing, or being eclipsed by them. Informed by the lines and brush strokes in her work, I drew over my photographs to connect what I saw in her work with what I captured in the photograph.
