Thanks to the Uganda chapter of the Patel family for taking me in, showing me the motherland, and attempting to poison me with my first paan— which I now know is basically a cocaine-like, menthol-laced, very wet dessert wrapped in a leaf. I’ve never felt such warm hospitality nor such fear for my own wellbeing. Now we are enjoying the fruits of a mid priority pass airport lounge and on our way to Tanzania to do some 🏔️ 🐆 🦒 ⛺️ 🏝️

TANZANIA pt. 5 – a grueling descent down to Lake Natron A stunning last couple of days. Knee cartilage ground to dust, but worth it for the Love Will Never Do Without You visuals. 10km (6.5 mi), elev loss of nearly 1,000m (3200ft) with most of that happening in the last 40% of the hike. Next time I will curl into a ball and you can just roll me down.
TANZANIA pt 1 – Kilimanjaro Our first stop in 🇹🇿 and I need to give it up to the exceptional @kilimanjaro360_view_cottages in Moshi. Locally owned and operated with love, cute dogs and all the vibes. Owners Muksin and Catherine have a piece of paradise here, and they personally made sure we had amazing meals, a beautiful place to stay and an excellent guide so we could spend a day hiking one of the most breathtaking mountains in the world. Then I took a fistful of x@nax and we got on the smallest plane I think they’re legally allowed to make. Pt 2 – on to the Serengeti to see some 🦁 🦒 🦓
TANZANIA pt 3. – Trekking the Ngorongoro Highlands / Maasai Land I was so happy to work with @shahtours who we found through @kilimanjaroporterstz when I was searching for an ethical tour operator to handle this part of the trip . It was an obviously such a wild privilege to have all of our meals, campsite setup, guiding and gear taken care of on this five day trek. Our team of porters did it all while keeping us safe, comfortable and, in the case of our local Maasai guides, inviting us to share their breathtaking ancestral homeland. In addition to fair pay, the locally owned company builds in meals for all porters and Maasai guides, snacks and extra clean water… all at negligible cost to us. It sounds obvious, but we were disappointed to learn from locals that not all companies cover these basic needs. It was a must for me that the people supporting us on this trek were properly cared for. We’re on their land, ffs! This is some of the most beautiful highland walking I’ve ever done. I can’t recommend this stunning region enough. (Pls expect roughly 2-3 more posts about it minimum, sorry!) And if you’re planning a trip to TZ please use the @kilimanjaroporterstz organization to find a similarly responsible operator for your expedition. It’s the absolute least we can do as conscientious visitors.
TANZANIA pt 2 – Serengeti This part of the trip was really moving for me because my Dad was obsessed with big cats, animals… the Serengeti in general. Anytime I went home he’d be watching natgeo, planet earth… I used to beg him to change the channel while we ate because I couldn’t handle seeing a lion rip out a gazelles rib cage while I ate pasta. Anyway. This part of the trip was to honor him and I like to think he finally got to see all these animals up close through me. And thankfully I didn’t have to witness any carnage so it’s win-win. Sorry to make this another post *lightly* about grief but I’m finding it’s helping to hold the tough things in balance always with the fun and light things so apologies if it brings anyone down but hey at least there’s cute cats!
TANZANIA pt 4 – more Ngorongoro Highlands Long walk day towards Mt. Lengai. 🌋 Rural villages. 🌋17 children. 🌋Diamond Platinumz. 🌋 Yellow Acacia. This day alone is why this whole area just replaced the Dolomites as my favorite trekking region in the world. Close runner up is Imlil Valley in Morocco. My hot take: Africa just might have better high altitude walking than Europe? But the outdoor community been sleeping on it because… well weeeee all know why. (Swiss ppl pls don’t come for me about my Europe dig your diet of melted cheese makes you formidable opponents and I don’t wish to anger you ☮️ 🧀 ✌🏻)
TANZANIA pt 6 – Zanzibar The place we stayed was fine! Loose dolphins. Stoney Tangawizi is my favorite drink. Bring your baby to da club. Dont worry, there’s plenty of clowns. Please hire us.
