This week for #FemaleFilmmakerFriday I want to shine the spotlight on actor, writer, and director @halinareijn for her latest feature Babygirl which premiered this past week at the #VeniceFilmFestival! From her award-winning acting career to her acclaimed directorial debut, Halina has made a significant impact on both stage and screen. Renowned for her roles in Black Book and Valkyrie, and her powerful debut feature Instinct, Halina continues to push boundaries with her storytelling. Her production company, Man Up (@manupfilmnl), is dedicated to crafting bold, female-driven narratives. Her latest work, #BabygirlMovie featuring @nicolekidman, is making waves at the Venice Film Festival. The film follows a high-powered CEO who puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with a much younger intern. Congratulations Halina, I can’t wait to see this one when it hits the big screen!

Repost 🔁 @hamoda_shahen, & @translating_falasteen: “The Palestinian woman can manage everything”: A Palestinian woman is seen digging through the dirt in North Gaza using a broken fragment, determined to plant vegetables to feed her family and neighbors.
@rainforest_fund is pleased to announce the support of a new project with @institutoraoni. The Amazon is one of the richest and most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. It continues to face extreme challenges from exploitation and deforestation. The Raoni Institute’s purpose is to protect their own indigenous territories and in so doing are instrumental in establishing sustainable income generating opportunities, harnessing the rainforests’ potential, without harm. This community based programme for the Mẽbêngôkre (Kayapó people) will increase the capacity of their Tonka bean (Cumaru seed) harvest. The seeds come from a native Brazilian flowering teak tree, known for its therapeutic properties as an anti-inflammatory, an essential oil in cooking and as a valuable ingredient in the cosmetic industry. By harvest completion in October, the Kayapo need to increase their capacity by ten fold, selling 500 kilo bundles of seeds, if they are to be competitive in local commercial markets. This funding will help them build the structure they need to do this. We are excited to play our part, since the Kayapo have been long standing friends and allies for more than 30 years. #rainforestfund #InstitutoRaoni #amazonrainforest Photographer: Simone Giovine / Kayapo – cumaru seed production.
Bravo @zacgoldsmithofficial for last week’s speech on the environment in the House of Lords which included this quote. ‘Far too often when we hear debates about the environment it is discussed as a political issue, with a very narrow focus on carbon and climate change. It’s really important that we keep our conversation as broad as possible. We could put all the solar panels in the world on all the rooftops around the planet, we could invest ten times more in energy efficiency, but if we don’t massively ramp up our efforts to protect and restore nature, it’s all pointless. There is no pathway to net zero, there is no solution to climate change without forests.’ @rainforest_fund supports this call to action.
This week for #FemaleFilmmakerFriday, we’re celebrating screenwriter Anna Symon (@anna.symon.5), the powerhouse behind the highly anticipated series Joan! Before making her mark as a writer, Anna excelled as a producer and director in current affairs and documentaries which eventually lead her to screenwriting. Anna’s journey began with the prestigious 4Screenwriting program in 2013, and since then, her exceptional story-telling skills have earned her nominations from BAFTA, BIFA, and the Writer’s Guild. Her impressive body of work includes The Essex Serpent, Deep Water, and Mrs Wilson, featuring stars like Claire Danes, Tom Hiddleston, and Ruth Wilson. Her latest project Joan, starring @sophiet, follows Joan Hannington who transforms from a housewife and mother to a jewel thief and criminal mastermind in 1980s London. Don’t miss Joan, premiering October 2nd and join me in celebrating Anna’s groundbreaking contributions to storytelling!

Repost 🔁 from @doctorswithoutborders: As of June 2024, over 600,000 Sudanese refugees fled to Chad since the conflict began last year-many of whom are children, completely disrupting their lives in #Sudan. Our teams spoke with Sudanese refugee children living in Adré transit camp and listened to their stories. Many spoke of adapting to food insecurity, living without electricity, and missing the comfort of home and being able to learn in school. Many are also supporting their parents by helping care for their siblings. They also shared their hopes for the future. Many expressed a strong desire to become doctors so they can help take care of people, while 11-year-old Ouman wishes to volunteer at the camp and help distribute aid. “I want to change things for the better for people.” Visit the link in bio to read more. #TalkAboutSudan #refugee
