Caption : Holding hands with an animal that died almost 200 million years ago. This is an ichthyosaur (marine reptile) paddle I found on the Jurassic Coast. Although we call them paddles locally, it’s a misnomer as ichthyosaurs didn’t use them to swim. Instead, they beat their tail side to side to propel themselves forwards while these front limbs kept the animal stable in the water and helped them steer. 🏖🐚🐬🦈🌊 When I found this fossil, the bones were all loose in the rock. So I had to piece them back together into their original arrangement. Which took some time! 🌊🦈🌊 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #paddle #jaws #marine #reptile #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 3122

Caption : Someone’s waiting for Father Christmas to arrive tonight… 🦖🎅🌲🐬 As another year draws to a close, I thought I’d share my favourite fossil of the year. I didn’t find it this year (I found in nearly a decade ago), but I did finally get round to getting it prepared to it’s full potential. The work was done by @naturalselectionfossils and the results speak for themselves. The work to get this fossil from a rock on the beach to this state took over 100 hours. 🦖🐬🦖 It’s the skull of a large ichthyosaur- Temnodontosaurus platyodon from the Jurassic Coast of Dorset. #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #jaw #jaws #tooth #teeth #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 2829

Caption : Here’s a decent ichthyosaur front limb (colloquially known as a paddle) that I found a couple of years ago on the Jurassic Coast. 🏖🌊🦈 I found it in bits and had to put it back together. I’ve still got a few more bones to reassemble but I’ve not yet figured out where they fit! If you swipe along, you can see what it looked like when still covered in shale before I removed it to reveal the detail of the bones. It’s well preserved on both sides. 🦈🐬🦈 These amazing bits of anatomy are some of the most exciting things to find as fossils. Sadly I don’t have the rest of this animal, it was probably lost to the sea before I found this bit. #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #paddle #jaws #limb #hand #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 2641

Caption : Here’s another one of my best fossils from the Jurassic Coast – a pefect juvenile ichthyosaur from the Blue Lias of Lyme Regis. 🌊🐬 This animal would have been pretty young when it sadly died 196 million years ago. It’s hard to know what killed it so young as there’s no evidence of any damage to the bones that would suggest predation or disease. 🐬🦖🐬 It also must have sunk into the deep mud on the seafloor quickly as there’s no evidence of scavenging that would have moved the bones around. 🦈🦈🦈 I have replicas of this fossil for sale on my website – check out the link in my bio to see them. #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #jaw #jaws #tooth #teeth #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 2534

Caption : Yesterday was the grand unveiling of the 200-year overdue statue to one of my personal heroes, the pioneering 19th Century fossil hunter Mary Anning. I’m sure many of you will be more than familiar with Mary’s life and work, but for those who aren’t, she is widely considered to be the greatest fossil hunter of all time. She found thousands of incredibly rare fossils at Lyme Regis that no one had found before and helped to start palaeontology as a science. Her specimens, including the first ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and pterosaurs, were pivotal in us understanding about life before humans in the deep past and were important in the development of the theory of evolution. 🦈🐬🦖 Sadly, she lived in poverty for much of her life, and was not properly recognised for her work in her lifetime. She wasn’t allowed into the Geological Society of London because she was a woman, despite knowing more about fossils than any man in there. The Jurassic Coast wouldn’t be the place it is without her, yet it’s taken this long for a statue to be made in her honour. 🐚🐚🐚 A massive congratulations to the team at @maryanningrocks for getting this statue put in its rightful place. And a special thanks to Evie for kick starting the whole thing. Your effort to get this done was incredible and will inspire generations who head out past Mary to go fossil hunting. I know I’ll be giving her a nod before passing by to find the same types of fossils she found. And I’m sure fossil hunters in 200 years will do the same! 🌊🏖🐚 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #beach #collecting #treasure #lymeregis #lyme #maryanning #maryanningrocks #jurassiccoast #dorset #ammonite #ammonites #ichthyosaur #plesiosaurLikes : 1998

Caption : Following on from my last post, this is the full ichthyosaur fossil I found many years ago on the Jurassic Coast. I found the skull in a small cliff fall in summer and could see where the rest of the fossil was in the cliffs. I had to wait as the bit of the cliff was too dangerous to attempt an extraction, which would have also required permission. Luckily, a few months later, that bit of the cliff fell, revealing the rest. 🗿🌊🗿 I was a bit disappointed to see that most of the body was missing, but it’s still a cool and rare fossil! It’s strange that the skull is so well preserved while the body is scattered, which might mean it nose dived into the muddy sediment on the Jurassic seafloor after it died. This would have kept the skull away from scavenging and reduced decay while the body was still exposed. 🐬🦈🦖🌊 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #jaw #jaws #tooth #teeth #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 1806

Caption : Here’s the ichthyosaur I posted a video of yesterday but with me for scale! This ichthyosaur was a juvenile when it died – it had only reached about half the size of a fully grown adult. 🐬🦖🐬 I’ve found several complete juveniles of this species, but I’ve only ever found one fully grown adult. Caption : This is the front limb of an ichthyosaur I found some years ago on the Jurassic Coast. 🏖🌊🐚 Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that were superbly adapted for life in the water. When alive, they would have superficially resembled dolphins, but their bones show how different they were. Their limbs evolved to have lots more bones in them, with ones like this having dozens and dozens. This would have given them great stability in the water. 🐬🦖🐬 This fossil is from the Early Jurassic and is around 196 million years old. 🦕🦖🦕 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #hand #paddle #jurassiccoast #dorset #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 1564

Caption : This is an incredible fossil of a 48 million year old bird feather from the Eocene age Messel Formation of Germany. This location has some of the best-preserved fossils in the world, many of which include soft tissues like these feathers. 🦜🐦 The feathers are preserved because the original pigment that gave them colour in life is very resistant to decay, and under the right conditions (no oxygen) can remain long enough to be preserved in the rock after the other tissues (keratin) have decayed. 🗿🐚🦜 The pigment isn’t the same colour that it would have been in life though. That changes as the rock heats up under pressure underground and chemical changes occur. The colours that it is now are caused by trace metals that bind too the pigment from the sediment. 🎨🦚 If you swipe along, you’ll see scanning electron microscope (SEM) images I took of the pigment granules (melanosomes) inside the feather for my PhD. These are tiny, you could fit 1000 of them end to end in a millimetre! #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #feather #feathers #bird #birds #messel #pigment #eoceneLikes : 1506

As it’s almost exactly nine years since I found it (on Easter day), I thought I’d share one of my best fossils once again. This massive Temnodontosaurus skull was in a big concretion in a cliff fall on the JurassicCoast. Sadly, the body wasn’t there and the jaws were badly damaged by the sea, but @naturalselectionfossils did an incredible job prepping it from the rock and reconstructing the missing bits of the jaws. You can see this fossil on display at the Charmouth Heritage Centre alongside many other incredible fossils found by local collectors. 🌊🐬🌊 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #jaw #jaws #tooth #teeth #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 1435

You can get all kinds of colours in these shells, with some having almost all the colours of the rainbow in. The colours change thanks to the layers of the shell that are stacked on top of one another and refract the light different. The thickness of these layers determine the colours, with thinner shells having blue and green hues and thicker layers having orange and red hues. Caption : This is one of my best fossils I’ve found on the Jurassic Coast – a near-perfect juvenile marine reptile called an ichthyosaur. 🌊🦕🌊 Usually, these fossils preserve the animals lying on their sides as they easily rolled over on the seafloor after they died, but this one preserves it lying on its belly with its limbs splayed out. It must have sunk into the mud on the seafloor like this before being preserved. 🐬 This one is so well preserved that it even has skin still present between its ribs. 🦕🦖🦕 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #jaw #jaws #tooth #teeth #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 1066

Caption : The newest addition to my collection! I found this juvenile ichthyosaur last year, but I’ve only just got it prepped by the talented Craig Chivers at @naturalselectionfossils. 🗿🦈🗿 The fossil was really exposed when I found it, revealed by some rough weather. Another storm would probably have destroyed most of it. The sea had already taken the front paddle and part of the ribcage, so Craig reconstructed these beautifully to show what they would have looked like before being lost to the elements. 🦈☠🌊💨🌊 This beautiful little fossil is about 70 cm long and has one of the best skulls of any of my ichthys, and the tiniest back paddles! The tail is also weirdly broken up and the other side of the skull is exposed having drifted slightly when it lay on the seafloor. Around 198 million years old. 🐬🦈🐬 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #jaw #jaws #tooth #teeth #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 1047

Caption : I found this large ichthyosaur jaw a few years ago on the Jurassic Coast near Lyme Regis. I found it in lots of bits that had to be glued back together. It ended up being way bigger than I was expecting, but also super thin and delicate. It would have come from a large animal! 🐬🦴🦈☠ Sadly, it was the only bone preserved and there was no sign of any other bones or even any teeth in the surrounding rock. 🌊🦈🌊 It’s around 198 million years old, from the Early Jurassic seas when dinosaurs were roaming around in the land nearby. #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #jaw #jaws #tooth #teeth #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 1023

Caption : Here are some better shots of the nautilus fossil from my latest reel that I found recently on the Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth. It’s very unusual to find one like this free of matrix (extra rock) on this part of the Coast, they’re usually inside hard limestone concretions (though still rare even then). 🌊🐚🌊 Nautilus fossils like these are strikingly similar to the shells of the living Nautilus despite being nearly 200 million years old. Unlike the much more common ammonites that died out with the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, the humble nautilus survived and still lives in tropical waters today. 🐚🐙🐚🏖 #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #ammonite #ammonites #nautilus #shell #shells #jurassiccoast #minerals #crystal #dinosaur #ageLikes : 1008

Caption : Plucking a pyrite ammonite from the shale on the jurassic Coast. These ammonites are preserved in tough iron pyrite, which is much more solid than the soft clay mudstone they’re preserved inside. 🐚🐚🐚 This means that when the sea washes over the shale, it erodes quickly, revealing the fossils that take much longer to be broken down by the elements. 🌊🌊🐚🌊🌊 If you get to them in time, you can find them in perfect condition like this one! . #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #ammonite #ammonites #gold #beach #beauty #beautiful #minerals #crystal #dinosaur #ageLikes : 986

Caption : Trying to teach the dog about fossils. I don’t think Tia quite gets the awesomeness of this fossil, or the fact that it’s nearly 200 million years old. It’s one of the best I’ve found, a perfect juvenile ichthyosaur from the Jurassic Coast. 🏖🌊🏖🐬 I’ve not been fossilising for far too long. I’ve been working on another project for the past few months, which is fossil related and pretty cool, but I can’t reveal anything about it yet! I’m getting the urge to go collection again though… #fossil #fossils #art #geology #palaeontology #paleontology #paleo #curiosity #ancient #history #collect #collection #animal #animals #evolution #science #museum #jewel #collecting #treasure #dog #jurassiccoast #dorset #teaching #rare #dinosaur #age #dinosaurs #ichthyosaur #bonesLikes : 971
