in some inexplicable way, my second summer volunteering as a counselor at experience camps, a national, no-cost program for grieving children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver, was even more deep than the last. it made my heart crack wide open in ways i didn’t know were possible.
these kids are some of the most exceptional humans i’ve ever known. their words and wisdom will linger with me all year. the campfire tears, the midnight giggles, the drama class bravery, the dining hall dance parties will stay forever with me.
it is so sad but profoundly magical that grief camp is my favorite place in the world. but it is. it is a place where community and understanding knows no bounds and shared perspective has visceral roots.
