This woman right here, is my ride or die and has been in my life for 40years now. Little known fact: We met in an aerobics class(that I was teaching at Richard Simmons Anatomy Asylum)before I even got my SAG card. We became friends instantly. Our sons are now each of our God-sons and we were at each others side during each of their births. @leah_kalish is one of the most exceptional human beings I know, she went from being a successful actress, to a child development expert, kids yoga teacher and curriculum developer, and now is an inherited family trauma constellation expert and somatic healer and I am so grateful that she has been in my life through every chapter. Today is her birthday- show her some love. Happy Birthday Leah! There truly are no words to measure how much you mean to me. I love you ♥️🎂

But…sometimes it’s magic. Because you have the opportunity to meet new friends you wouldn’t have otherwise. Like this woman right here: Katie Shaffer, the incredible mastermind behind @feastitforward who is a boon to the Napa Valley. One day -Our dog Skye, pulled us across the road and into her business 5 years ago and she has become one of our dearest and treasured take aways from our time here filming @13reasonswhy. She even hosted an after party for the cast and crew of 13RW following the screening of my directorial debut #3 Normandy Lane. She has created a network that is a growing champion of fantastic food, film, philanthropy and wine for the benefit of the community. Recently, her daughter took this series of fun photos in her new space “The Yard” behind @feastitforward which is a historical gathering spot for concerts, food tastings, music festivals, and celebrations of all sizes. Her vision is fueled by her desire to give back to the world through the things that she loves. She even sent us a bottle champagne posthumously from our dear Skye to celebrate our anniversary. If you are anywhere near the Napa Valley I highly recommend visiting her and seeing what she’s up to. You may find yourself fast friends for life.

This radiant soul is my mother Jean. I am so blessed to have learned how to love from her. Someone once asked me what my mother looked like, and I said “She looks like love walking in the room.” I know I’m lucky. Today I celebrate her. But I also celebrate those who embody the essence of Mother, whether you are one or not. Loving kindness can be expressed on the daily, not just with children, but with pets, the elderly, those less fortunate, strangers, or even the most difficult, ourselves. Even if you didn’t have the kind of mother I did to set an example, it’s never too late to learn. The old adage stands true: If you want something- give it. The reason she was such an incredible mother was because she wanted to break a cycle. She had to learn from scratch and was willing to do the uncomfortable work of showing up. Sending you love today. I know it can be a day fraught with complex feelings. In the face of that, I encourage you to give yourself some unconditional “mother” love. That’s what Jean would have wanted. I miss you Mom. ♥️
