🖤🖤WALTZ🖤🖤(excerpt)performed by @balletdecatalunya dancers @davidgarcialucas and @paolo.calo on stage @liceu_opera_barcelona for @ibstagegalas with music by @les_stuck STAY TUNED FOR SHOWS IN JAN 2025 @nycitycenter *** Fun fact- this musical score made up of triplet rhythms (hence the title WALTZ) was reimagined and tweaked from an original composition in the 1980’s for a ballet by @william_forsythe_ for @nycballet. I was searching and searching for music for months after choreographing this duet and could not find something that I loved. I wanted something edgy, with elements of technology, classical, tango, and jazz…I got in touch with composer Les Stuck, who I knew from my time dancing with @linesballet, and he suggested taking inspiration from an older work of his from a ballet that is sadly no longer currently being performed, and the music rights had expired several years ago. I was apprehensive about using music that already exists especially for a ballet by such an iconic living choreographer, but Les reminded me of how many choreographers use the same Philip Glass scores, or Bolero, Rite of Spring, Four Seasons…the list goes on…and here I had a chance to revive and breath new life into an excellent score that hasn’t seen the light of day for years. I had never seen the original ballet, and it was an unusual process for me because I choreographed the piece to different music and changed and tweaked the final music for the piece AFTER the duo was created. I still haven’t heard the original score in its entirety, because Les basically re-created it based on my existing choreography and specific timings and vision for how I wanted the music and dance to mesh. A first for me in my creative process, but I am so happy with the result.
