I started my journey with two friends, revisiting Hampi, a place I had faded memories of from childhood. I’ve wanted to return for years, and this trip finally happened because of them. We left Bangalore around four-thirty in the evening, and when we arrived, there was a light drizzle that set a perfect mood. Right from the beginning, we decided not to focus on photography or appearances; instead, we wanted to immerse ourselves in the experience. The next day, we aimed to catch the sunrise at Malyavanta Raghunatha Temple, but the cloudy weather prevented that. The temple was stunning, with a stage where queens and children performed. Our guide explained the Shastanga Namaskara and the beautiful sculptures. We learned that bhajans are sung around the clock in the temple. We also visited Purandara Dasa’s place, where he meditated and composed songs. Our journey continued to Vijayawada, where the guide encouraged us to use our imagination, as many structures were destroyed. We explored the recently discovered Kalyani and learned how it was re-found. The beautifully structured elephant yard was impressive, but we couldn’t see the king’s palace, Raj Mahal, as it was completely destroyed. Climbing Hanuman Betta, I marveled at the agriculture and greenery amid the rocky landscape. This trip reminded me that while art can be created and destroyed, what we build within ourselves remains untouched. I felt a deep connection to our culture and the warmth of the people we met.
