In your 45th year, you kissed a stingray on her nose and caught a hawk on your arm. Hawks are your messenger of love and we once counted 80 of them on a single highway, driving cross country. You felt the nostalgic thrill of a tilt-a-whirl and tasted the new delight of an oyster. You understood the importance of marriage in Mexico City when you experienced the danger of an underdone egg. Even shaking with fever & unable to leave your bed, you exuded kindness for those taking care of you, and I fell in love with your heart even more deeply. You watched pods of dolphins play in the waves on the edge of the earth and stared in awe at the skeletal underbelly of a California Condor. We danced to The Beach Boys on a first summer’s night and I knew it was Forever. You told me your definition of happiness is driving home to me with Chinese food and I begged the universe to give me a million more, at least. You ventured to the North Woods and inhaled the evolution of things. You experienced a playful ghost. Twice! Once in a Pink House & another in an Old Inn. You found comfort in these greetings, in the whisper of the beyond, and we laughed with wonder. You led me to the edge we jumped, you promised me marriage would be fun and I thought how lucky I am to experience life with a comedy guy 🙂 You officially became a cat dad! And a pickleball player! And you are THE favorite guest of the friendly skies… We look for signs everywhere and we believe in them. In yellow flowers and sea lions, in strawberries and winged things. You carried me through the darkest moments and when I couldn’t find the light you found it for me. You ARE the light. “I loved you long before I knew you. You were always in the sunlight… in the corners of my young mind. Little whispers in a daydream, little voice that always saved me… you were hiding in plain sight.” I loved you long before I knew you. And now that I know you, I wish there was another better word for love because that word seems to pale in how I feel for you today. Happy Birthday to my favorite person. You are so good. So incredibly decent. So kind and deep and curious and wild. I will always be waiting, as you drive home to me.💛

Our first trip with @smiletrain in #MexicoCity 🇲🇽 We were deeply inspired to witness the comprehensive care for cleft patients here (throughout their lifetimes). The moment a patient walks into this Smile Train partner hospital, they are evaluated to understand the extent of the support needed- this may include: nutritional education, orthodontics, multiple surgeries, psychological support, speech therapy, and more. This incredibly thoughtful system is housed on one floor of the hospital, providing effective healthcare communication and collaboration for each patient. The doctors on the ground are some of the most brilliant and empathetic we have met (Justin and I know first hand, as we both came down w / a stomach bug and received care 🙏🏻). @smiletrain is truly changing families’ lives, and their smiles made US smile and now we hope they make YOU smile.
