Anjali Patil Instagram – I am glad I could witness a brilliant short film, Veni (2024), at Dharamshala International Film Festival 2024 @diff.india, (otherwise could have been missed because of time crunch). It is directed by @vishal.jejurkar and co-written by @snehal.kalpana.
It’s a story about an old lady, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. She is loved and taken care by her family. The fact that she is suffering from a condition where one forgets things makes the story interesting. As a result, she is so subconsciously convinced about something which is otherwise in actuality. This makes us question about her relationship with woman in the family and acceptance of her womanhood.
It raises the questions about the mentality of society towards girl-child birth, and the deep-rooted prejudice towards acceptance of a girl-child even after loads of years are passed once the girl child is born. It’s a strong take on a woman’s acceptance of womanhood. And that just hits it. Veni exposes this information in a beautiful and subtle way and indeed leaves you with quite an experience.
While raising these disturbing questions, it does bring a smile on your face in one of the outro-scenes where the son-in-law braids her hairs!!
It also provides a glimpse of hope towards end, when another character played by @anjalipatilofficial, who is the subject of denied ‘girl-hood’, hopes to be graced with a daughter (a girl child), and that’s what makes the film solely meaningful in the given setup.
