Phoebe Tonkin Instagram – Today on International Day of the Girl, girls’ rights charity @plan_australia has teamed up with streaming service @stanaustralia, and invited myself, a proud Plan ambassador, and a group of 15 incredible young women to curate for you a list of inspiring films and series that champion gender equality, smash gender stereotypes and promote strong women characters.
Working in the film industry, I am all too aware of how influential movies and media can be. Although there has been progress, and there are a growing number of exciting filmmakers making more positive and authentic depictions of women and girls in all their diversities, women are not portrayed enough, and when they are they’re far too often sexualised. This can have a real impact on girls aspirations.
As one of the amazing young women, Aish, who contributed to this list said: ‘visibility means possibility’
These 25 movies and programs show that when they’re not held back, girls are capable of extraordinary things.
