sometimes it’s easy to write off people with intellectual disabilities as not being able to understand the world the way we do or not having the same desires and aspirations as we do. Therefore it’s better to leave them home or leave them behind. Living with thambi I’ve realised how much he enjoys being included. We’ve always done it to the best of our ability but sometimes we have to fight our parents on it and fair enough. They want to protect him at all costs so would rather him just chill and we just want him to join us. Today, we had to chuck on bathrobes and tell our parents we were just going down to the pool just to create content and we weren’t going to swim 🤭 but you best believe he did. Can you see that cheesy smile on his face? Swimming is one of his most favvvvv activities so he was so happy. It’s a great way for him to get a good stretch and his steps in because when we travel he spends most of his time in the wheelchair. This trip has been so eye opening as thambi grows and develops and I see so much improvement in him. Travel has been a better therapy for him than any other therapy. Truth is long distance relationships are not for the weak and having one person leave their world behind for someone is inexplicably harder. To have someone who left everything he knew, everything he loved, entering a whole new country, whole new environment purely just to be by my side and support me with my personal family situation (which I’m sure many of you will understand) has been nothing short of a blessing. An answered prayer if you will. So much load has been lifted off my shoulder because this man chooses to not just lift with me but lift me while he’s at it. Having one person leave their world and move to the other side poses it’s own challenges. We don’t get to have the best of both worlds and families at once. We miss so many important days, celebrations and milestones. You watch your partner have a longing that deeply pains you and you feel so helpless.. There’s always a void that’s hard to fill and it’s a continued 🎢 that we work through day in and day out. Of course it’s hard to pick up the phone and document the hard days and moments and you naturally want to preserve the happy moments but I’d love to highlight many people go through so many highs and lows. We scroll and watch the highlights of people’s lives and sometimes we forget there are so many battles being fought behind all of that. There’s a lesson in every experience. Through the tough times you learn sooooo much about yourselves and you realise what truly matters is how you choose to choose each other and work through all the chaos and hurdles together. We’ve lived many years intimately feeling the pain of being apart and now we fight for a life that gives us the freedom to be between both worlds and families in due time 🤍 But for now I’m going to relish in my answered prayer 🙏🏾 [long distance, kadhal, tamil couple, marriage]

Born from Swarnaa’s @thelifeofasocialbutterfly somewhat contradicting experiences growing up with both Tamil and Australian influences, Swarnaa created STL to challenge cultural views around sun exposure, body image and what is considered ‘modest’ when it comes to swimwear. I love that the brand celebrates women of all backgrounds, skin tones and sizes which is so evident in the models Swarnaa chooses to represent her brand and online store. Her swimsuits represent years of research put into designing pieces for different body shapes and different levels of comfort and was the first south Asian swimwear brand to walk at Miami Fashion week. Even then, Swarnaa stayed true to her vision of representing women of colour and all different body shapes with the models who walked for her show and I do so admire that about her and her brand. She has stayed true to who she is and what her brand has represented from the very beginning. I remember years ago speaking to Swarnaa when she first came up with a print and was looking for places to print her fabric and it’s so so inspiring to see how her brand has grown since and I am so excited for the next collection coming soon!
