The way this little girl and her younger sister showered thambi with love just made me fall head over heels in love with them. Speaking to her, I saw little me & probably hundreds and thousands of us who were in her position at one point in our lives and probably still reside within our hearts. to think there was a time when my complexion was a bad nightmare. What a dystopic period that was.. A time where there was no concept of “colourism” in my vocab. Where there was no parallel between being dark and seeing yourself as beautiful and worthy. I walked around with a lot of shame and disgust towards myself. Truly feeling like the unlucky one for this complexion. Truly hoping this was all just a bad.. bad… dream. Everything negative felt like it was rooted in my complexion. My sense of identity in my formative years as a child felt so tainted by this complexion. Nothing I did felt good enough because I was made to feel judged, teased and singled out. Nowwww I’m at a point where I am not only comfortable but in LOVEEE with my skin. This is all thanks to the UPROAR of women who came out of the shadows to share their experiences around Colourism. Being able to openly talk about it, connect with others that had similar experiences from around the world has been unbelievably cathartic. COLLECTIVELY we chose to bare our truth and unlearn what we had been fed for years around the notions of complexion and beauty and that has been SO powerful. So to all of you who did step up and talk about Colourism online or offline whether you were directly impacted by it or saw others impacted by it – I’m so proud of you because what a movement it has been. There is still more work to be done but I hope for the future that no other child has to experience that bad fever dream and we establish a better reality for them from the get go because hey! hosted an intimate picnic soirée over the weekend with a few of my fav girlies to celebrate my business @swanathelabel hitting 10k 🤍 thank you @birdsnestpicnics for sponsoring the set up. It looked so beautiful 😍 4 years ago an idea dawned on me to create a size inclusive, comfortable, stylish, empowering brand and swimwear line. Here we are a year into officially being in business celebrating 10,000 of you that have joined our community. There was a point in my business where I wanted to give up and I remember my husband @apollos_fitness reminding me of my WHY and I’m so glad he did ❤️ Reading messages from customers around the world on how comfortable they feel in their swimwear and how they’re no longer afraid of any swim plans because they’ve got a piece from our collection that makes them feel supported, comfortable and most importantly empowered is so fulfilling. This picnic was going to end with a swim with the girls and my knee jerk reaction the night before was to stress out thinking my body is not in shape, I don’t feel the best, how is swimwear going to look on me when I realised I’ve created a collection that totally eliminates that – there’s a piece for everyone from little coverage to full coverage. I opted for my Saisha one piece and Tropics sarong and I felt soooo beautiful & confident! 🌴 I think this was a really big ah-ha moment telling me I’m on the right path with this business and brand because these experiences are so real and not catered to enough and I want to do everything I can through this brand to eliminate the insecurity and liberate women to feel their best. It was never about our bodies fitting clothes and swimwear. It was always about clothing being created and fitted for our unique beautiful body types and modesty and support preferences with style at the core of it all! This was such a beautiful and wholesome afternoon, eating, sharing what we’re all up to, celebrating one another, seeing the girls all come out wearing their favourite STL pieces for the swim. Such a full circle moment. A massive thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey, I am forever grateful 🫶🏾 excited for what’s next! ✨💕
