Reem Ajour, a mother from Gaza, has been separated from her husband, Talal, and their four-year-old daughter, Masaa, since March 2024. The family had sought refuge in a relative’s home in Gaza City after being displaced during the ongoing genoc/de.
On March 24, Israeli forces raided the house, opening fire as they stormed in. Reem, who was three months pregnant, was shot in the stomach. Talal suffered a severe leg injury and was bleeding heavily. Masaa, just four years old, was shot by Israeli forces in the shoulder, passing out but still breathing, as Reem recounted.
An Israeli soldier pointed a gun at Reem and ordered her to head south. Reem said she begged to stay with her family, but the soldier shouted, “Go south!” With no choice, she grabbed her younger son and left, still bleeding.
“It was all in a blink of an eye,” she said. “It was all so fast.” Bleeding and in pain, she walked for over two hours, carrying her son, until she reached a hospital in central Gaza. There, doctors treated her stomach wound and found her babys pulse. However, weeks later, the babys heartbeat stopped, and she suffered from a miscarriage.
Eight months have passed, and the 23-year-old mother still has no answers about the fate of her husband and daughter. The occupation claims it does not have them. Shortly after the raid, Israeli forces levelled the house where Talal and Masaa had been staying. Reem does not know if they were still inside at the time.
“I am living and dead at the same time,” she said.
