Ten years ago today my friend Florence Kleiner died, aged 19. Her family were generous enough to allow me to write about her in my memoir and dedicate the book to her. One of the most quoted passages of the book on Good Reads is not from me, they are her words. This extract from her yearbook entry. Her wisdom continues to astonish me and acts as a mantra even in the hardest of times. My lifelong guru turned out to be a teenage girl. She would have been 29 now, and I often think of all the work she would have created. She always wanted to be a writer and a director. I feel so lucky that I get to write for the both of us and so sad that I won’t ever get to watch and read all that she would have made. Today her sister Farly and I went out for breakfast and raised a Bloody Mary to her. Florence’s baby niece was on my lap, her middle name is Florence. She lives on in every way possible. I have put a link to Blood Cancer UK in my bio and stories for anyone who would like to donate in Florence’s memory.
Last night was such a special show. The end of my first trip to Australia and New Zealand, the end of the Good Material @faneproductions shows and the last live tour I will be doing for a long while. Writing books and selling books are two very very different things and the selling can be a tricky ole business. Doing live shows is always the best and easiest bit. Thank you to all the audiences who come for a good time and with such good will. I’ve had a ball. (Special shout out to my new little sister @lucyblakiston, the Shelley to my Barbie, the Sabrina to my Taylor, for taking this photo on her ironic digicam and allowing me to give her advice she doesn’t need and begin sentences with “in my day”.)
