I auditioned for it as a dancer many times right of college, but never got kept. Did a lot of gigs, got my singing and acting chops up. Then went in about 20 times for Elphaba in a span of 10 years, casting coaching sessions included. I remember leaving notes for my apartment neighbors letting them know, “I’ll be warming up for Wicked auditions again. Defying gravity at 10am. Here’s a bottle of wine, sorry thanks.” And then I’d go in and sing the heck out of it! And never got a callback past that.
Finally, my agent called with different news. He said, “So, they’re not gonna call you in for this anymore. You just don’t have the voice they need for an Elphaba. So it’s not ever going to happen.” I replied, “Good. Because I’m tired of warming up for that 11am audition! I’m ready to make space for something else.”
And then If/Then with Idina followed by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend happened months and months later. What’s meant to be yours is meant to be yours. Trust your instincts close your eyes and leap!
Wicked has been such a huge part of my career even though I’ve never performed in it. It taught me hard work still pays off. Your gift is uniquely yours and it’s your job to show it to all who’ll listen and then share it again and again. Then again. It’s changed so many of my friends’ lives and I’ve seen it so many times with all of them in it, cheering them on. It makes me cry and it takes my breath away every time. I’m so proud to be a part of the story too and I can’t wait for the movie!… and not warm up and sing along to it either!
