This last weekend @billboardca gave me the Trailblazer Award; “an honour awarded to a female artist who acts as a music industry pioneer by using her platform to spotlight unheard voices and break ground for future generations of performers.” Very grandiose. I am just an artist and before that, just a human, so to be honest I often feel like I can do more in that regard, however, to be recognized (and to be recognized at home) for something deeper than the superficial, was an honour. When I was thinking about this speech, I found myself digging into the meta; the only reason that I’ve been able to take chances as a creative and remain myself and “trail blaze” so to speak, is because that freedom to go against the grain and create into the unknown was something that was inculcated in me as a child by my mother. It happened to be her birthday the day I was to deliver the speech; how fitting. My mother has always been charitable. My mother has always held grace. My mother has always let me creatively express myself despite people’s long tongue judgements towards a mother doing her best. She’s always held space for me to be me and ultimately, she gave me permission not to ask other people for permission. ‘Be you and do your best’ This award doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to her. Feliz cumple años 🫶🏽 Gracias Mami. And thnx Billboard.❤️ @billboardca @billboard
