Cut Salt Print. 14” x 11” The cover image for my book might be a typical example of the way I’ve worked for decades, whereby small personal stories or obsessions collide with ideas that fascinate me from the outside world, and come together in an image that pretends to be simple… just a straightforward picture of something, from a time lost to history. In 1969 (not coincidentally the year of my birth), the French writer Georges Perec wrote a novel called La Disparition — a strange mystery about a missing person. The entire novel was written without using the letter “e” — the literary trick is called a “lipogram” — giving it a weird tone and deepening the sense of something absent, word to word. It was later translated into English as “A Void”, also without the letter “e”. (Amazing!) This is the version I read; I never quite made it through the French… Honestly, that could be enough inspiration for all kinds of images, but since everything I make is fundamentally born from my life, inspiration never materializes into anything unless it means something personally. It’s rarely overt, and I never feel the need to explain, but iI’ll tell you this: I made this not long after a friend had died from an overdose, and I was thinking a lot about drugs (never done ‘em), alcohol (love it), and my own Straight Edge upbringing (I avoided it all until I was 27…) Anyway, my book has tons of images like this, full of personal significance.
