A lot of Women on TV don’t just slip on these form fitting dresses and outfits onto our “perfect bodies” and wander off into the Sunset. We got serious ARMOUR under there! Pulling things in, lifting them up, squishing them down. I’ve done shows where I had Spanx sewn into bras, pinned into control-top pantyhose, and topped with dresses made of wet-suit material. That’s why it doesn’t look like I have tummy rolls or “double-boob” or whatever other bullshit we judge women for. And it’s expensive and uncomfortable and NOT REAL! On one show I did, where I got a lot of positive attention for my Body, it took TWO WARDROBE ASSISTANTS to pull me in and out of my dresses because they were so tight and the “under-armour” was so elaborate. Is that really “My Body”? No, it’s a manipulation like filters and photo editing. I’ve gone many nights in my career not eating, not PEEING and trying to avoid sitting because my wardrobe was so controlling. Most of our ideas about Women and Beauty are actually about controlling us and making us buy things. And I know I’m a part of the problem sometimes so I wanted to share this Truth with you. Never forget that the people you wish you looked like on TV don’t actually look like that either. You’re perfect. The Woman on the left: It took a hair and makeup team two hours to achieve this look. A big production company paid for the haircut, the makeup and the stylists who executed it. Also, no one sits like that in real life. Ever.
The Woman on the right: This is how she looks in real Life. She is just as Beautiful, Valuable and Loveable as the Woman on the Left. In fact, in my opinion, she is even more of those things because she’s real. She’s working, she’s aging, she’s tired, she’s Happy. And she sits in comfortable positions on her couch.
In case you needed reminding today, the next time you look at the Women on your Screens and in your Magazines and feel bad about yourself, remember that they don’t look like that either. It’s a construct. It’s a way to keep us buying products and paying for diet programs. Look however you want, do whatever you want with your appearance, no judgment, no shame. Whatever makes you feel good in your skin. But don’t do it because of what Women in the media look like. Because they don’t look like that. And you look exactly how you’re supposed to look. ❤️My Sweet Friends, Fans and Family. Hello Again. I know that many of you noticed that I took a little Social Media break this Winter. It has been almost two months since my last post. It was not an intentional break at first. In December I found myself feeling exhausted by the thought of trying to share my feelings as the New Year approached and I decided to listen to and respect that instinct. Like many of you, 2021 was one of the hardest years of my Life. I am someone who has so many points of privilege but, even with all of the advantages I am lucky to have, I found myself wilting and grappling with the heaviness and anxiety of the pandemic, the political and cultural heartaches we have encountered and the professional and personal tolls that this moment in the World has taken. In each day I have had moments of feeling great fear and great Hope, profound sadness and profound Gratitude. It has been a time of looking at my life and the World around me and asking myself who I want to be and how I want to walk through this new World as I Grow and Change. I needed to take some time to sit in these feelings and face these challenges and find my centre again. The best advice I received in this time was to let myself feel all these things. To find strength and pride in allowing myself to feel it all and then move forward. And now I’m moving Forward. It’s good to be back and I look forward to sharing 2022 with you! I was crossing the street yesterday and guy in a car yelled “Get out of the road fattie”. It’s crazy how, even though I’m a grown ass woman who knows the guy is a tool, it still upset me. It brought back terrible memories of my childhood bullying flooding back and an old familiar feeling of shame. But I’m far enough along in my journey that I was able to pretty quickly move on, reminding myself that “hurt people, hurt people”. That men cutting Women down to feel powerful is about them and not us. And that the whole incident had nothing to do with me. BUT, what I also realized is that had he yelled anything else, had he yelled “You’re too tall”, “your style sucks” or even “You’re ugly”, I would have just laughed and brushed it off as the stupidity of a sad little man. It wouldn’t have even registered. But small men know as well as we do how impossible body standards, diet culture and body shaming have damaged Women’s self-esteem. It was because I have this cultural fat phobia that it affected me. I would rather someone tell me that I’m stupid, mean, arrogant or un-talented than for someone to call me fat. And that’s “F#%KED UP! It’s similar to how we’d rather irreparably damage our bodies with dieting than live in healthier bigger bodies. It’s a cultural sickness and it’s wrong. I’d like to thank my friend @jimivere for introducing me to the term for a guy like the one who yelled at me on the street. “Douche Canoe”. He was a Douche Canoe. But so is this culture for Women. So I’m going to keep working to love myself and to focus on the voices that life me up. And I’m here to lift you up if you need it! Stand tall Friends. What a CHARACTER! Playing #mariamarquessa in #farcry6 was one of the highlights of my career thus far.
