Richa Chadha Instagram – I don’t think there’s been any other director who has had a greater impact on me as an actor than Mr. Shyam Benegal. With his passing, indeed an era has ended. Akin to the dying of a folk tradition that was kept alive by one diligent artisan, who will be survived by none because the offspring have to choose other vocations for survival and commerce. An era of quality cinema made by evolved souls who understood the responsibility of their being and the purpose of their life! His cinema elevated mundane life to the spiritual. A life well lived indeed! Credited with a staggering 75 films, he truly was a prolific, compassionate genius. His passing is a loss to cinema at large, not just Indian films.
I came to Bombay, with the dream of working with him… on many occasions, right after college, (I traveled to his Tardeo office, to drop of my photographs, number on the backside in the hope of securing an audition). But it was not to be… ❤️Jealous of people that got to be directed by him.
A big thank you to @shivendradungarpur for organising this screening of MANTHAN , digitally restored in June this year. If I weren’t ambling along in my 9th month of pregnancy, I would have mustered up the courage to ask Shyam sir for a photograph. Who’d have thought that would be the last time one would meet him… 💔
