We had no such hashtags for our union. We didn’t have an event planner, dress designer, no florist, dance choreographer, videographer (which I regret till date) I didn’t even have a make up artist. We planned and executed everything on our own. We picked a location, decided the menu, searched for and designed the mandap decor, our own clothes and we got married. Bas as simple as that. We don’t have perfect pictures, we didnt look like a prince and princess. Yes the horse was milky white with long silky tresses absolutely magnificent but he belonged to the next door ka baraat. And we had danced so much at our sangeet we almost considered postponing our wedding to the day after but it was too late, food for 100 people (thanks to our parents) was cooked. By the end of the evening we weren’t jumping with joy, over flowing with romance or desperate to lay hands on each other. We were just exhausted, tired and dying to sleep. And that’s exactly what we did. Over the years we have celebrated our union in multiple ways. First, just the two of us, then the four of us. And sometimes, many of us (friends and family). We planned surprises for each other, gave gifts, flowers and letters (that’s me), cooked or ordered his favourite food. Music, friends, parties. We have done it all. But today, we choose to chill at home, just us. It may not be the best way to celebrate an #anniversary but it is the best way to celebrate life. Life that is solid, rooted, persistent and forever. Food is comfort, it’s remedial, it is home coming and it is love. Each dish is related to a memory that has left an indelible residue not only on my tongue but also my heart. There is food to eat and survive and then there is food that not only satiates my tummy but also my soul. Like the kachha kairi and kamrak with black salt that the bhaiyya sold outside school that left my voice hoarse but it was absolutely worth it. The coolness that came with holding a phantom cigarette which was not ‘sehat ke liye haanikaarak’ at all. The vibgyor a kala katta gola left on my tongue. #Kissmi toffee that stayed stuck in my gums spreading sweetness long after the sweet had melted away. Rooh Afza made milk tolerable and Bournvita had to be eaten not mixed in milk and destroyed. It was mandatory to split a Jim jam biscuit in 2 and lick the red jelly. My birthdays were incomplete without a Monginis cake. Soft over cooked rice will always be puchku rice. And ghee mithu bhaat or tup meeth bhaat in any language means comfort. And Ghee gudh roti is contentment. Licking a well earned quarter piece of lime dipped in glucose powder after a race on sports day in the scorching heat was way better than winning a medal. There is so much more food for soul I want to share with you but I also want to know what were your favourite treats that till date take you straight back to being a child, full of buttery hope, colourful stains and a crunchy and carefree spirit.
