On this day in 1992, The Bodyguard film opened in the U.S. and Whitney made her feature film debut as lead actress to co-starring actor and Oscar-winning director Kevin Costner. The film was a blockbuster, earning more than $410 million worldwide. The soundtrack, featuring six Whitney songs — including the record-breaking #1 hit “I Will Always Love You” — has sold more than 45 million copies and is the biggest-selling soundtrack of all time. Whitney parlayed her success with The Bodyguard into additional leading roles and the formation of her own production company.
December 10, 1996: Whitney’s version of “I Believe In You and Me” (previously recorded by The Four Tops in 1982) was released as a single from the soundtrack for her film ‘The Preacher’s Wife.’ David Foster produced the single version and Mervyn Warren produced the soundtrack version. Whitney received a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her performance of the song at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards in February 1998. The New York Times praised the song as one of “the year’s most virtuosic pop ballads.”
December 4, 1990:Whitney’s version of “All The Man That I Need” was released as a single by Arista Records. The song was first recorded by Linda Clifford in 1982 as “All The Man I Need.” Whitney’s version (from her third album ‘I’m Your Baby Tonight’) became a number one multiple-chart hit. Written by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford with production by Narada Michael Walden, it remains her fourth biggest hit from the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Her performance of the song in 1991 at her “Welcome Home Heroes” HBO concert remains of the most loved versions.
December 13, 1996: Whitney Houston co-starred in ‘The Preacher’s Wife’ with Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington. The film, based on the Christmas classic The Bishop’s Wife starring Cary Grant and Loretta Young, was directed by Penny Marshall and grossed nearly $50 million at the U.S. box office. Whitney co-produced the movie soundtrack, which has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling gospel album of all time.
34 years ago in December 1990, the single “I’m Your Baby Tonight” (from the album of the same name) became a #1 hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Singles Chart.
