Oscar- a ballet based one the life of Oscar Wilde by Christopher Wheeldon. Composed by Joby Talbot. A tender, sensitive and romantic show about the mother of all mothers. Few people know that Oscar Wilde wrote “The Soul Of Man Under Socialism” and that this was not a small factor in his tragic persecution. I had a lovely time and I was particularly moved by the reading of the above poem written by Lord Alfred Douglas, Wilde’s lover, after his death. Playing 13th to the 24th of September and then Sydney in November.

I do ask myself where are all the “feminists” too when it comes to the Gaza genocide but also when it came to other horrific wars in the Middle East that decimated women and children. In fact upper middle class feminism was often used to justify these imperialist interventions in order to “free” the women living under despotic Muslim regimes. But if a woman is bombed, if her children are bombed, if their schools are bombed, if their hospitals are bombed, if she is lucky to survive but there is no future in her country for her children because the whole economy is destroyed is this freedom? Is freedom being able to go out and vote for a government that is the puppet of the West and is willing to prostitute the countries resources in exchange for bribes? Then I remember that upper middle class feminism is most of all concerned with the career interests of upper middle class women who most of all want a bigger share of the shrinking pie often at the expense of men. For the most part the concerns of upper middle class men or women including the activists and the “lefties” are petty. They don’t care for the fate of the world’s working class or the women and children of the working class, whether they are in America or the Middle East or anywhere else in the world. Standing against Western imperialism and its horrific wars which devastate working people most of all completely fell out of middle class fashion after the early 80’s. For all of their talk of diversity, inclusion, safe spaces, closing the wage gap, education for girls and better representation they are fairly and squarely in the camp of the enemy of the people. The recent Salem witch trials called the #metoo movement is just one of many proofs. Whenever the whole capitalist establishment presents something as a “progressive movement” you can be assured that it is either a joke at best or total reactionary filth at worst. Genuine progress isn’t going to come from the top it can only come from the bottom. P.S. We are living in hell and we need to change it.
