Respectful repost of this red flowering gum image from @flowersvasette I have no context as to whether this is a finished bouquet or the beginnings of something spectacular but as a general principle: if there is a person alive who is unmoved by a giant pile of red flowering gum supported by human legs then I absolutely do not want to meet that person
Gift from my firstborn who has astutely combined my love for notebooks with her love for trolling me … be still, my heart ♥️
This is Lachlan Kean, who died a year ago aged 37 of bowel cancer… one of the growing cohort of young fit people diagnosed with a disease we tend to think of as something that happens to older people. Lachlan’s symptoms – constipation, abdominal pain, blood in the stool – weren’t recognised as problematic because of his age and good health. Did you know that as of July this year, if you’re 45 you can request a free bowel screening kit? Just call 1800627701. And you can get one via your GP even younger. Most importantly – don’t ignore the warning signs. 90 per cent of bowel cancers are curable if picked up early enough. Tonight I was lucky enough to meet Lachlan’s beautiful family as they and his friends and many generous supporters gathered at @ivysydney for the @lachlankeanfoundation to raise money – massively needed – for research and trials directed precisely at this new young cohort of bowel cancer patients. Swipe for the giant cheque presentation! A lot of people have contributed generously. Give this crowd @lachlankeanfoundation a follow. But the most important thing, as Lachlan and my late sister in law Anisa and every single person sideswiped by this monster way too early would no doubt say: Don’t ignore warning signs, don’t feel embarrassed, don’t think “I’m too young”…. Just get it checked out. Doesn’t take a minute. Congratulations to Lachlan’s community for pulling this together. Thanks to Dr Meg Barnet of the @garvaninstitute for adding research heft to the evening. And @karlstefanovic_ for donating his considerable auctioneering skills even though he’s a man of few free evenings. This disease is changing. Let’s not be caught napping xxx

Reading highlight of recent brief and very lovely holiday: Intermezzo, by Sally Rooney. Had it knocking round for a bit and hadn’t picked it up but my daughter urgently recommended (as did her cockatiel who ate the lower part of the front cover) and ooofff. I am forced to agree it is extremely good. An at-times unbearably sharp evocation of the way insecurity, history, family and grief can gum up the works of human relationships.
Salad for an oily-minded pescatarian in need of a protein and iron boost … chickpeas, Sirena chilli tuna, hard boiled egg, cime di rapa, green olives, capers, toasted almonds. Dressing is a basic cigarette with a question mark of mustard
HUGE NEWS about the Melbourne show. Tickets in bio.
Statice update 🤓 from a beautiful couple of days spent at @st_albans_courthouse feeling a million miles from anywhere and replacing the noise of everything just for a little while with king parrots, whip birds and the gentle murmur (!) of cockies. Also peacocks from across the valley at @settlersarmsinn. And a truly spectacular thunderstorm. Mostly work related reading but I cheated periodically with @huahsu’s extraordinary memoir of youthful loss, Stay True. Lucky to be able to hide away for a few days, I know. Thinking of those who can’t.
Latest innovation to encourage various of my children to come on board with mushrooms. Last night I made Shimeji mushrooms into spicy fries. Cut the gritty end-bits off the stalks, still leaving enough so that the mushrooms stick together in clumps (these are very beautiful small slender long-stemmed mushrooms, you can also use enoki for this recipe) Whisk an egg white until foamy. Fold the mushrooms clumps through the egg white until they are all covered. Now toss carefully with potato starch or tapioca flour, I reckon cornflour would also do here. I’d avoid wheaten flour just cos it gets sticky very fast. Deep fry until golden. Drain briefly on absorbent paper then toss with a spicy salt and pepper mix. This was for a dinner of rice bowls with a Moroccan sort of whiff so my spice blend was: White pepper corns, pink pepper corns, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, all toasted then ground in mortar and pestle, with some smoked paprika and rock salt. Pinch of sugar. All smashed up and tossed fairly liberally through the mushrooms. I ate most of them and the eldest was already in the bag: I would describe the reaction from the younger ones as cautious but not “hell no”.
“It aint no shame to love the banjo”. You are so right @gillianwelchofficial and your show at @sydneyoperahouse last night was UNBELIEVABLY great. First gig for my 12yo daughter and her jaw was on the floor throughout – what a thing to remember for the rest of her life. Thank you to you and @davidrawlingsmusic for your generous encores and shout out to the acoustics at the @sydneyoperahouse … it was perfection. A balm for the Hard Times that are all around us, and a little sparkling jewel of perfection for everyone lucky enough to be there ❤️

Kick to kick at Henson Park as the shadows lengthen … Magic. Incredible game today with endless jaw dropping @aflwomens feats of athleticism, fought down to the last 30sec, @sydneyswansaflw edging out the mighty @gwsgiantsaflw but nothing but thrills for the fanta fans ❤️
I met some of the great stars of the @gwsgiantsaflw quite by accident a while back, on a plane. Recently I received this ICONIC video …. How could I resist such an invitation??? Particularly when presented so powerfully by the great @prawndall ? Therefore, we will be heading along to Henson Park tomorrow arvo to watch these champions take on the Swans. Come along! Henson Park is the greatest ground in the world IMHO. Kickoff 3pm, gates open 1pm come and soak in the delights of this fabulous location on what looks like being a perfect day!!!
My @abcnews_au column today is about the Independents that both major parties dream of eliminating. They are thought of as numbers… but how have they changed the parliament? Warning: contains the term “cavoodle belt”. I’m trying to make it happen.
Believe us when we say that even reviewing this short clip caused Sales to dissolve into giggles like a kid who has just discovered whoopie cushions. Damn you, Murph.

Today, for @abcnews_au’s new “Long Reads” series, I clap on the safety goggles to take a look at Australia’s decade-long defamation boom. Did you know it all started with a 21-word Tweet? Why is this country the defamation capital of the world? Why do plaintiffs “go back for their hats?” Are men more likely to sue than women? Why are things different in America? Make a cuppa cause it’s a long read, as advertised. But it’s an interesting tale. And much enriched by the beautiful, wry accompanying artwork from Gabrielle Flood and the editorial ministrations of @leightonkin_, for both of which many thanks. Give my linktree in profile a bit of a shake or just head to the @abcnews_au site… Hope you enjoy. Yours in happy and perennial hatlessness, AC

One of our wilder exchanges, I’d say. Possibly escalated by the excitement of being on stage in Perth without serious medical misadventure, who knows? Anyway thank you, Perth Chatters @chat10looks3 it was a tremendous evening. Under discussion: Elon Musk, what is money laundering, what is it with the super rich etc
