First date night in I can’t even remember how long. Thanks @hayop.sg for the invite and for allowing @gamedaywithboom and I to talk about something other than how tired we are or about our son. (Who am I kidding, of course we spoke only about our son 🤦🏻♀️ #parentproblems )

Thought long and hard about speaking about this but after reading all the DM’s I realise this NEEDS to be talked about. What we think of the Media Industry, that it’s glamorous or whatever, is a small fraction of what actually goes on. I started acting at 12 and unfortunately this isn’t a new issue for me and many others who put themselves out there in the public. Here’s hoping we can be OPEN and HONEST about the things people say and also hold them accountable to it. It’s a long reflection so I’ll split it into a few parts so we also have time to think about it and go a little deeper into the underlying issues and feelings it develops ❤️🩹
I rarely make New Year’s resolutions. But this one I’m really hoping to stick to. ❤️ #rabeanco #NanaTote #mumlife
Here’s part 2. I love the conversations I’ve been having with people through dm’s. So many going through similar situations or some who are just enraged to hear that this sort of archaic mentality still exists in this day and age. You don’t need to be a woman to relate to this situation. If you’re a son, brother, father, nephew, just imagine the women in your life having to deal with these sorts of comments and then being told that it’s “normal” in their industry. It’s awful. ❤️🩹
Merry Christmas from Cohort 1!
I call this the Itsy Bitsy dance 🕷️ #mumlife
How does one think it’s okay to make these kinds of comments to strangers?? 🤯🤯🤯 Voice recording is at the end of Part 1.
Thank you for lending me your time, your heart, your anger, your pain, your love and your support over the last few days as we navigate this sticky topic which has been allowed to fester in the Media for so long. Sometimes it’s spoken about but then it’s quickly replaced by another topic. Please don’t let this pass as a mere “incident”. If you know someone who is dealing with something similar, reach out to them. If you’ve seen someone behave inappropriately, say something about it. The only way things will ever really have a lasting change is if we collectively decide that we don’t want to allow ourselves or the people we love to be treated as a piece of meat. Something to judge solely on appearances. That mental and emotional health should take a backseat to image and marketability. Thank you for listening and thank you for the waves and waves of love that has poured in. You have given me so much strength and hope that we really can be better. Thank you. ❤️🩹

Parts 4, 5 and 6 should be watched in succession because that really is the journey you go though as a performer. The highs are higher than the sky and the lows are soul killing. To be a performer, it requires you to already give so much of yourself to your craft. Adding your appearance and having people critic you on it with regards to your everyday life, not even a role you are preparing for, just makes you feel inadequate as a human being. If you had to bulk up to play Superman, or let yourself lose muscle mass because you are cast as a person who had an accident and is bed ridden, that’s all part of the job. So getting into character that way is completely valid. But to make a comment on someone’s appearance in a social setting that has NOTHING to do with a specific role, is just hurtful. Using the excuse that they are “doing you a favor” and “telling you this for your own good” is gaslighting at best. ❤️🩹
As the conversation continues, I’m realising it’s bringing back a lot of buried emotions I first had when I entered the industry. Extreme feelings of anxiety, self doubt and hating my body. As a woman it already takes so long to fall in love with who YOU are. It’s takes years of internalising and active work to embrace our bodies. And I’m finally in a place where I can truly say “my body is amazing”, so to be confronted with a comment from a producer I don’t know, at a time where I’m vulnerable as I’m coming back from a 2 year break, was really, really arresting. As if being away from the media for 2 years wasn’t nerve wrecking enough. “Will I be forgotten? Will I still be relevant? But I look different now, will people still hire me?”. These are all real thoughts I had on a daily basis. And I finally felt confident enough to step back into the industry and to make an effort to be at a party where I could meet “like-minded” people. It’s just a rude reminder to never let our guard down. ❤️🩹

Seeing @banksy ‘s artwork IN REAL LIFE was surreal. From the documentary ‘Exit Through The Gift-shop’, to his exhibition in Melbourne 7 years ago that I stumbled into, I’m never not in awe at the statements he makes with his pieces. It’s hard to put into words what you feel when you view a Banksy art piece, but it toes the line between ‘complete amazement’ and ‘complete insanity’. But I suppose that’s like many other artists. This is the first time Banksy’s pieces have been displayed in Singapore, a country that is unforgiving for unauthorised street art. And here is Banksy, the King of guerrilla artistry. He is known for creating art and having it discovered on streets around the world. Till this day, his face has never been shown in the media so no one, outside of his circle, knows what he looks like. I find that absolutely fascinating. How can one of the world’s most accomplished artists of our age still be able to hide his identity? The Art Of Banksy: Without Limits Level 1, 25 Scott’s Road, Singapore 228220 #ArtofBanksySingapore
