Deborah Roberts Instagram – What a life. What a legacy. Jimmy Carter defied the odds so many times. Years after his diagnosis with a brain tumor, he continued teaching Sunday school. He entered hospice last year, only to surprise all of us by reaching his 100th birthday. While I never knew him personally, Jimmy Carter’s indefatigable spirit of hope and love touched me so very deeply. A small town peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia , not far from my hometown, I have felt a kinship with him since he won the presidency in 1976. My father beamed for days about this fellow southerner had shown the world what a Georgian, a simple man, could do. He brought old fashioned values to Pennsylvania Avenue along with his beloved wife, Rosalynn. Never afraid to own his faith and his failures, he served only one term as president. But he would go on to become a humanitarian and global leader in democracy and decency. A winner of the Nobel peace prize. A giver to his neighbors. Who can forget seeing him wield a hammer while helping build homes for the poor with @habitatforhumanity
James Earl Carter, our 39th president , showed us all what resilience is and true integrity and leadership long after he had left politics behind. He walked the talk of living a life of purpose and caring. A champion for human rights. My heart aches for his loss but sings for his example of courage and goodness. Rest in peace Mr. President as you join your wife in glory.
