I hope and pray for her healing : the weight she carries for all of us of what she put herself through to bring her attackers to justice must be extraordinarily heavy. I feel so much for her, for her daughter, for her daughter-in-law and all the other women who have been betrayed by this monster,this husband,this father,this grandfather.
As we celebrate the maximum prison sentences, at the same time as feeling that 20 years for her husband,and 12 or 15 for others who perpetrated horrendous crimes against this unconscious and unconsenting woman are shockingly short , we must remember that in the United Kingdom, for example it was not recognised as a crime for a man to rape his wife until 1991.We have actually not come very far,and the fact that this case has been so engulfing,important and historic is also a signal that there is so much still to do. Violence and sexual violence against women and girls is at an all-time high. It is imperative that it is not only survivors, friends and family of survivors and women that post about this.Men,show your support by posting a tribute and your desire for change.
My last point is-whilst in no way can Gisèle Pelicot be described as lucky:the fact that her monstrous husband had chosen to record his crimes meant that there was incontrovertible evidence of his abuse .Very,very few victims are in this position ,which is why so few sex crimes are reported ,much less punished . Women :girlfriends, mothers, wives and daughters are harmed sexually very often in their own homes-and most of them do not report it because the “he said/ she said”culture is freighted so heavily against the victim, who will only be more traumatised by bringing a case that is very likely to collapse .
