Thank you to everyone who came out to our screening of Anuja yesterday – I am so passionate about this film and I thought I would talk a little bit about why. My company receives many films and scripts focused on South Asians and young women. I was lucky enough that one of these submissions was an email from Suchitra Mattai. Suchitra is a successful multidisciplinary artist whom I was aware of mostly from constantly trying to buy her art (check her out at @suchitramattaistudio ✨). She told me about a short film she had produced with her husband, Adam Graves, called Anuja. I won’t lie to you – I have my shows and three kids and it all feels like so much, and so I was not necessarily in the mindset of someone who could come onboard as a producer of a short film. But by the end of the 22 minutes, all I could think was they better still want that because this is SO GOOD, I have to be a part of it! Anuja tells the story of two young sisters who live in a world that is intent on their exploitation. So you would think that it’s a grim or somber story. But what makes Anuja so special is it completely surprises you by being the opposite. It’s funny, it’s exciting, and just like the sisters in the film, it’s full of hope and opportunity because as Adam spoke about yesterday, even young women like these characters who exist in extraordinarily challenging circumstances are full of life. We are over the moon that Anuja is on the Academy’s shortlist for Best Live Action short and I am so excited for everyone to hopefully get to see it soon. Thank you to our friends at @creativeartistsagency for hosting this screening. (When we arrived, I was accidentally an extra in an episode of Suits being filmed in your lobby. I’m not exaggerating. Apologies to all involved, however it was very glamorous for me. XO)
