Tembi Locke Instagram – We did the thing we always do every first day of a new year. It began when I first came to LA, a newlywed. We brought aspiration and prayer to the ocean shore, we stared at the rim of the world. Young, hopeful, and soon shook by life, the ocean could hold what was too big to carry. Then, we brought a baby with chestnut eyes and loopy black curls. Zoela. What joy! She was carried on shoulders, she soon ran after kites in the sky. Then, life changed. And it was the two of us alone. She and I. At sunset, we pitched stones into the horizon. We let the wind carry our tears. Years like that. Then years in between. Now, we bring Robert to the continental edge for the first sunset of a new year. We play music on the bike path and then offer a trio of prayers at low tide. The water knows. Some places are touchstones. They are solace and hope, joy and peace. Time as sand underneath our feet.
