![Swarnaa Rajalingam Instagram - sometimes it’s easy to write off people with intellectual disabilities as not being able to understand the world the way we do or not having the same desires and aspirations as we do. Therefore it’s better to leave them home or leave them behind. Living with thambi I’ve realised how much he enjoys being included. We’ve always done it to the best of our ability but sometimes we have to fight our parents on it and fair enough. They want to protect him at all costs so would rather him just chill and we just want him to join us. Today, we had to chuck on bathrobes and tell our parents we were just going down to the pool just to create content and we weren’t going to swim 🤭 but you best believe he did. Can you see that cheesy smile on his face? Swimming is one of his most favvvvv activities so he was so happy. It’s a great way for him to get a good stretch and his steps in because when we travel he spends most of his time in the wheelchair. This trip has been so eye opening as thambi grows and develops and I see so much improvement in him. Travel has been a better therapy for him than any other therapy. He’s got better eye contact, he’s observing his surroundings, enjoying having his family around him at all times, trying new foods, seeing new places… I can see the glint in his eyes and it’s been so heartwarming. 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍

![Swarnaa Rajalingam Instagram - I was picking up my niece and nephew from Tamil school on the weekend when I bumped into some of the kids I tutor & their dad. I was speaking to the dad about how I had never met their mum before. The dad pulled out his phone to show me a photo of his wife when his 10 year old daughter quickly intercepted to say “oh btw she’s fairer and prettier. She looks very different to us!” Seeing her abruptly give me a disclaimer before I saw a photo of her mum and say mum was prettier than her or her siblings it broke me. I had to immediately intercept and tell her how beautiful she is. I could see her comment came from a place of BRACING herself because she’s probably heard comparison comments in the past. You know the standard “oh the kids don’t look like the [insert whichever parent is lighter].” I know this is a common practice to make comments on appearance and who the child looks like in our community but comparison on complexion and condemning those who don’t inherit lighter complexions is so detrimental.
I’ve had a similar experience happen where my family attended a 21st party for a family friend when I was about 12 years old and we got up to take a family photo. An aunty watching made a comment to another mutual friend of my mum’s: “oru pillaiykum thaiyinda vadivu kideykeyla” In translation: neither of the kids inherited the mum’s beauty. This was unfortunately shared with my sister and I and it really destroyed our confidence. I hated going up for family photos because I was worried I’d be compared to my mum. Additionally people always took it upon themselves to ask my parents who I inherited my darker complexion from because neither of my parents were considered dark. Truth is why does it even matter?!
So can we just be mindful about comparing complexions in kids and their parents, speaking on appearance because kids really absorb that in and it takes a long time to unlearn that ish.

![Swarnaa Rajalingam Instagram - our childhood was consumed with a lot of confusion and uncertainty. We spent a big part of it learning about thambi’s disability, understanding how it will impact his life and consequently ours (this is still a continued learning process). Understandably there was a lot of anxiety around what his future would be like and wondering if we will all be okay. It was a very isolating journey because as a community we don’t talk about disabilities or know how to help a family with someone who has a disability. Over the years we have learnt so much and it’s safe to say thambi surprises us every day with what a strong, resilient, happy bundle of joy that he is. We are so grateful for this life and have come to understand that the most important thing he needs is boundless amounts of LOVE 🤍 and the most important thing we need as a family is a village of people we can lean on for support. We will forever be so grateful to everyone who came into our lives, showed us so much compassion and continue to make this journey less lonely!
For any young families with a child being diagnosed with a disability or for those who have a family member with a disability I know it can be a very scary & daunting journey. But I want you to know you are not alone. Don’t be a stranger and reach out if you need. I wont have all the answers but I will definitely be able to understand. I trust our story gives you hope that it’s all going to be okay ❤️

Truth is long distance relationships are not for the weak and having one person leave their world behind for someone is inexplicably harder. To have someone who left everything he knew, everything he loved, entering a whole new country, whole new environment purely just to be by my side and support me with my personal family situation (which I’m sure many of you will understand) has been nothing short of a blessing. An answered prayer if you will. So much load has been lifted off my shoulder because this man chooses to not just lift with me but lift me while he’s at it.
Having one person leave their world and move to the other side poses it’s own challenges. We don’t get to have the best of both worlds and families at once. We miss so many important days, celebrations and milestones. You watch your partner have a longing that deeply pains you and you feel so helpless..
There’s always a void that’s hard to fill and it’s a continued 🎢 that we work through day in and day out.
Of course it’s hard to pick up the phone and document the hard days and moments and you naturally want to preserve the happy moments but I’d love to highlight many people go through so many highs and lows. We scroll and watch the highlights of people’s lives and sometimes we forget there are so many battles being fought behind all of that. There’s a lesson in every experience. Through the tough times you learn sooooo much about yourselves and you realise what truly matters is how you choose to choose each other and work through all the chaos and hurdles together. We’ve lived many years intimately feeling the pain of being apart and now we fight for a life that gives us the freedom to be between both worlds and families in due time 🤍
But for now I’m going to relish in my answered prayer 🙏🏾

![Swarnaa Rajalingam Instagram - I discovered a lump under my armpit a couple of years ago which lead me down a rabbit hole of medical check ups (dw I’m all good - it’s extra breast tissue because I clearly don’t have enough of that right?! 🫠 🙃 - anyone need me to donate some over? 😁). Despite the medical scares and check ups after being told I’m all good to go I’ve been having to come to terms with the physical impact this change has had on my body. Having already gone through quite a journey in embracing my body and telling myself that my body can also wear swimwear or strapless dresses or anything sleeveless and rock it, this new lump had me feeling self conscious all over again. I hope to get rid of it someday but for the time being whether I do or not I need to embrace my body, embrace the changes happening to it because if I don’t I’m only depriving myself of wearing the things I want, experimenting and just exploring being me. So if any of you are experiencing changes in your body big or small that make you feel self conscious please know you’re not alone 💖

![Swarnaa Rajalingam Instagram - It has always been a dream of mine to have my own space, my own vanity and office. Working with @design.m.studio made that dream more in reach as she helped me take a room we had in our home pull elements from my Pinterest boards and visually depict how it would all look functionally. She was so detail oriented, understood my needs and even put together a list of where to purchase each item with links. We’ve been sitting on these illustrations for over a year and I never got around to purchasing everything and bringing it to life. As my birthday gift this year, @apollos_fitness surprised me with a whole room makeover. He found the images and used it as reference, purchased everything, secretly put it together (that week we were at my parents place so I didn’t suspect anything) and then put his own spin. I love that he included the dark skin goddess illustrations from @uma.jeyaseelan a project I collaborated with her on that’s very dear to me, the @swanathelabel LED sign and the add of touch with his choice in decor pieces. I know it was a massive labour of love and I couldn’t be more grateful for this space. More than the material aspect of this room it’s special to have a space of my own to walk into to do all the things that I love which is content creation, working on my business, my full time job and have a dedicated space to do my makeup and get ready. I can’t explain the sheer joy and gratitude I feel and I cannot wait to create more content for you guys so stay tuned ❤️ . Love you @apollos_fitness 🥹

2. A husband who loves hard, willing to move mountains to just be together & granting me with a second family I get to also call home 🇨🇦
3. Being blessed by god that it was our family that was chosen to love and care for a special needs sibling who is our absolute world because the love we receive is the greatest love I’ve ever experienced
4. Friends that see me for me and are just as passionate & just as ferocious in loving me as I do them.
5. Getting to travel on all expense paid trips to India and China through work 👩🏾💻 & interact with global teams and learn from a professional and personal level
6. Launching a brand I worked so hard on at Miami and see it still continually grow & get appreciated
7. Opportunities with brands I genuinely love and adore
8. Having a powerful network that I can leverage to help encourage, empower and support others
9. Family that sticks by you through thick and thin ❤️
10. Having people that see the spark in you when you lose sight of yourself and people who speak so much life into you every time you talk that they leave you feeling so inspired and re charged.

![Swarnaa Rajalingam Instagram - Our trip in Malaysia was a reunion for my dad to see his high school friends after 40 years. He had friends fly in from UK, Europe and different parts of Australia. These are people we had never met before. So this was one heck of a FAMILY trip. There was no chance my sister and I were going to rock two pieces or even one pieces but we didn’t have to think twice about what swimwear we were wearing on this trip. My sister and I are two different body types but both of us knew we were going to rock the @swanathelabel Saisha one piece. It looks flattering in ALL body types. What I personally love about it is l, for those of you girlies who need extra support (such as me) you can wear a bra underneath it. I spent a whole year testing the swimwear material and it’s completely resistant to chlorine, sunscreen and oils. This was the ONLY swimwear we packed on this trip and we wore it every single day through pools, island hopping and jumping into oceans. It dries so freaking quickly! It’s highly elastic, got incredible shape retention and pulls you in in all the right spots in such a comfortable way. From dreading water activities around family because I never felt like I had swimwear I felt cute in, supported in and most importantly comfortable in around family gatherings to now it being an absolute no brainer on what I was packing. We were able to feel so present and create the best memories. Did I also mention the material is entirely sustainable as we take used plastics from the ocean to regenerate into this swimwear! So if you’re looking for a piece that makes you feel snatched, but something you can pair with shorts to make more modest or family friendly THIS is the piece!

I’ve been craving to celebrate the way they do back home. After the kids finished visiting for Halloween trick or treating I got the family together and we created our first kolam/rangoli. It was so wholesome to have everyone sitting in the front porch just vibing, as we curated our first design. Thambi was chilling on a chair supervising and I swear his positive vibes really set the tone. I found doing a Kolam sooooo therapeutic. I get why they do it every morning back in India/Sri Lanka what a great way to start the day! For a first go it did take us 3 hours 😂 but we are really proud of the design. Lemme know if you guys wanna see 🤭. I Googled what was the purpose of doing a rangoli and it said it’s to welcome Sridevi (Lakshmi) and sends away Mudevi so you can imagine the field day of jokes my parents had on my sister and I 😂

Caption : sometimes it’s easy to write off people with intellectual disabilities as not being able to understand the world the way we do or not having the same desires and aspirations as we do. Therefore it’s better to leave them home or leave them behind. Living with thambi I’ve realised how much he enjoys being included. We’ve always done it to the best of our ability but sometimes we have to fight our parents on it and fair enough. They want to protect him at all costs so would rather him just chill and we just want him to join us. Today, we had to chuck on bathrobes and tell our parents we were just going down to the pool just to create content and we weren’t going to swim 🤭 but you best believe he did. Can you see that cheesy smile on his face? Swimming is one of his most favvvvv activities so he was so happy. It’s a great way for him to get a good stretch and his steps in because when we travel he spends most of his time in the wheelchair. This trip has been so eye opening as thambi grows and develops and I see so much improvement in him. Travel has been a better therapy for him than any other therapy. Caption : Whilst travelling through Jaffna my family came into acquaintance with the cutest family. The way this little girl and her younger sister showered thambi with love just made me fall head over heels in love with them. We decided to do a little shopping and exploring and this was a little conversation I captured whilst vlogging the trip. ⠀ ⠀ Is it not so heartbreaking to know that a young child as young as five wholeheartedly BELIEVE she is not attractive because she is of a darker complexion? Speaking to her, I saw little me & probably hundreds and thousands of us who were in her position at one point in our lives and probably still reside within our hearts. I was speaking to the dad about how I had never met their mum before. The dad pulled out his phone to show me a photo of his wife when his 10 year old daughter quickly intercepted to say “oh btw she’s fairer and prettier. She looks very different to us!” Seeing her abruptly give me a disclaimer before I saw a photo of her mum and say mum was prettier than her or her siblings it broke me. I had to immediately intercept and tell her how beautiful she is. I could see her comment came from a place of BRACING herself because she’s probably heard comparison comments in the past. You know the standard “oh the kids don’t look like the [insert whichever parent is lighter].” I know this is a common practice to make comments on appearance and who the child looks like in our community but comparison on complexion and condemning those who don’t inherit lighter complexions is so detrimental.
I’ve had a similar experience happen where my family attended a 21st party for a family friend when I was about 12 years old and we got up to take a family photo. An aunty watching made a comment to another mutual friend of my mum’s: “oru pillaiykum thaiyinda vadivu kideykeyla” In translation: neither of the kids inherited the mum’s beauty. This was unfortunately shared with my sister and I and it really destroyed our confidence. I hated going up for family photos because I was worried I’d be compared to my mum. Additionally people always took it upon themselves to ask my parents who I inherited my darker complexion from because neither of my parents were considered dark. Truth is why does it even matter?!
So can we just be mindful about comparing complexions in kids and their parents, speaking on appearance because kids really absorb that in and it takes a long time to unlearn that ish.

To have someone who left everything he knew, everything he loved, entering a whole new country, whole new environment purely just to be by my side and support me with my personal family situation (which I’m sure many of you will understand) has been nothing short of a blessing. Having one person leave their world and move to the other side poses it’s own challenges. We don’t get to have the best of both worlds and families at once. Of course it’s hard to pick up the phone and document the hard days and moments and you naturally want to preserve the happy moments but I’d love to highlight many people go through so many highs and lows. We scroll and watch the highlights of people’s lives and sometimes we forget there are so many battles being fought behind all of that. There’s a lesson in every experience. Truth is long distance relationships are not for the weak and having one person leave their world behind for someone is inexplicably harder. To have someone who left everything he knew, everything he loved, entering a whole new country, whole new environment purely just to be by my side and support me with my personal family situation (which I’m sure many of you will understand) has been nothing short of a blessing. An answered prayer if you will. So much load has been lifted off my shoulder because this man chooses to not just lift with me but lift me while he’s at it. Having one person leave their world and move to the other side poses it’s own challenges. We don’t get to have the best of both worlds and families at once. We miss so many important days, celebrations and milestones. You watch your partner have a longing that deeply pains you and you feel so helpless.. There’s always a void that’s hard to fill and it’s a continued 🎢 that we work through day in and day out. Of course it’s hard to pick up the phone and document the hard days and moments and you naturally want to preserve the happy moments but I’d love to highlight many people go through so many highs and lows. How good does this print look on my skin 😭😫😍 This brand is so so special to me. I’ve been there from the start and watched this brand come to life. Swana The Label celebrates diversity in skin tones, body shapes (with sizes ranging from 2XS to 4XL) and blends all south asian cultures into one stunning print featuring elephants, peacocks, palm trees and a fusion of Indian and Sri Lankan cultural motifs. Born from Swarnaa’s @thelifeofasocialbutterfly somewhat contradicting experiences growing up with both Tamil and Australian influences, Swarnaa created STL to challenge cultural views around sun exposure, body image and what is considered ‘modest’ when it comes to swimwear. I love that the brand celebrates women of all backgrounds, skin tones and sizes which is so evident in the models Swarnaa chooses to represent her brand and online store. Her swimsuits represent years of research put into designing pieces for different body shapes and different levels of comfort and was the first south Asian swimwear brand to walk at Miami Fashion week. Working with @design.m.studio made that dream more in reach as she helped me take a room we had in our home pull elements from my Pinterest boards and visually depict how it would all look functionally. She was so detail oriented, understood my needs and even put together a list of where to purchase each item with links. We’ve been sitting on these illustrations for over a year and I never got around to purchasing everything and bringing it to life. As my birthday gift this year, @apollos_fitness surprised me with a whole room makeover. He found the images and used it as reference, purchased everything, secretly put it together (that week we were at my parents place so I didn’t suspect anything) and then put his own spin. I love that he included the dark skin goddess illustrations from @uma.jeyaseelan a project I collaborated with her on that’s very dear to me, the @swanathelabel LED sign and the add of touch with his choice in decor pieces. I know it was a massive labour of love and I couldn’t be more grateful for this space. More than the material aspect of this room it’s special to have a space of my own to walk into to do all the things that I love which is content creation, working on my business, my full time job and have a dedicated space to do my makeup and get ready. Truth be told this has been a bit of an insecurity for me but I’m trying to find products that help bring back some colour or products that just work on pigmented lips. Whilst playing around with some products I discovered this combo that I’ve been wearing on an everyday basis and I LOVE! Caption : Bringing my Pinterest dreams to reality with this super duper wholesome glamping experience. Also it’s ONLY 90mins from Toronto which is a pretty sweet drive! Vince had been in Canada for a couple of weeks while I was galavanting through Malaysia so once we reunited we definitely needed a little getaway. Being an Aussie when I think of winters I think of cosying it up in the woods in a cabin, a fireplace in the background, a hot cup of tea and @glenorofarm made that an epic reality! I’ve been craving to celebrate the way they do back home. After the kids finished visiting for Halloween trick or treating I got the family together and we created our first kolam/rangoli. It was so wholesome to have everyone sitting in the front porch just vibing, as we curated our first design. Thambi was chilling on a chair supervising and I swear his positive vibes really set the tone. I found doing a Kolam sooooo therapeutic. I get why they do it every morning back in India/Sri Lanka what a great way to start the day! For a first go it did take us 3 hours 😂 but we are really proud of the design. Lemme know if you guys wanna see 🤭. I Googled what was the purpose of doing a rangoli and it said it’s to welcome Sridevi (Lakshmi) and sends away Mudevi so you can imagine the field day of jokes my parents had on my sister and I 😂

Caption : to think there was a time when my complexion was a bad nightmare. What a dystopic period that was.. A time where there was no concept of “colourism” in my vocab. Where there was no parallel between being dark and seeing yourself as beautiful and worthy. I walked around with a lot of shame and disgust towards myself. Truly feeling like the unlucky one for this complexion. Truly hoping this was all just a bad.. bad… dream. Everything negative felt like it was rooted in my complexion. My sense of identity in my formative years as a child felt so tainted by this complexion. Nothing I did felt good enough because I was made to feel judged, teased and singled out. Nowwww I’m at a point where I am not only comfortable but in LOVEEE with my skin. This is all thanks to the UPROAR of women who came out of the shadows to share their experiences around Colourism. Being able to openly talk about it, connect with others that had similar experiences from around the world has been unbelievably cathartic. COLLECTIVELY we chose to bare our truth and unlearn what we had been fed for years around the notions of complexion and beauty and that has been SO powerful. So to all of you who did step up and talk about Colourism online or offline whether you were directly impacted by it or saw others impacted by it – I’m so proud of you because what a movement it has been. There is still more work to be done but I hope for the future that no other child has to experience that bad fever dream and we establish a better reality for them from the get go because hey! Caption : hosted an intimate picnic soirée over the weekend with a few of my fav girlies to celebrate my business @swanathelabel hitting 10k 🤍 thank you @birdsnestpicnics for sponsoring the set up. It looked so beautiful 😍 4 years ago an idea dawned on me to create a size inclusive, comfortable, stylish, empowering brand and swimwear line. Here we are a year into officially being in business celebrating 10,000 of you that have joined our community. There was a point in my business where I wanted to give up and I remember my husband @apollos_fitness reminding me of my WHY and I’m so glad he did ❤️ Reading messages from customers around the world on how comfortable they feel in their swimwear and how they’re no longer afraid of any swim plans because they’ve got a piece from our collection that makes them feel supported, comfortable and most importantly empowered is so fulfilling. This picnic was going to end with a swim with the girls and my knee jerk reaction the night before was to stress out thinking my body is not in shape, I don’t feel the best, how is swimwear going to look on me when I realised I’ve created a collection that totally eliminates that – there’s a piece for everyone from little coverage to full coverage. I opted for my Saisha one piece and Tropics sarong and I felt soooo beautiful & confident! 🌴 I think this was a really big ah-ha moment telling me I’m on the right path with this business and brand because these experiences are so real and not catered to enough and I want to do everything I can through this brand to eliminate the insecurity and liberate women to feel their best. It was never about our bodies fitting clothes and swimwear. It was always about clothing being created and fitted for our unique beautiful body types and modesty and support preferences with style at the core of it all! This was such a beautiful and wholesome afternoon, eating, sharing what we’re all up to, celebrating one another, seeing the girls all come out wearing their favourite STL pieces for the swim. Such a full circle moment. A massive thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey, I am forever grateful 🫶🏾 excited for what’s next! ✨💕Likes : 3
