Some years ago, we were fortunate to spent time with this gorgeous female leopard named Fig as she raised her cub on the plains of the Maasai Mara. A frightening clash with lions left Fig wary of rival cats, so we often found her in the safety of the treetops resting in the boughs and occasionally using her lofty vantage point to launch aerial attacks on prey. This wisdom was passed on her cub, and the youngster quickly learned to use trees to her advantage. Vital knowledge that she’ll no doubt need one day to survive. #leopard #bigcats #wildlifephotography #bigcatsofinstagram #conservation
Motherhood in the animal kingdom is a testament to resilience, teaching, and unwavering care – every lick, nuzzle, and watchful gaze shapes the future of the next generation. This serval mom’s gentle grooming helps keep her kitten’s fur clean and free from parasites but it also reinforces the powerful bond between mother and offspring – a connection that can be felt across multiple species in the wild. Servals may not get as much of the limelight as their larger feline relatives, but these elegant, long-legged cats play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. With their incredible hunting skills and success rate, they help control populations of rodents and other small mammals. This wide-eyed kitten will grow up to be an important part of a delicate web of life that deserves to be protected. The lure of a well-positioned vantage point usually proves irresistible to cheetahs – they are drawn to termite mounds or fallen trees as though driven by an innate instinct. In the stillness of the savannah, these two brothers clambered onto a tree stump to survey their vast kingdom. For male cheetahs, forming coalitions greatly increases their chances of survival. It means extra eyes to scan for threats and an increased chance of success when on the hunt. Their bond is unbreakable, a partnership forged by survival and trust in a world where every day is a test of resilience. Every moment we spend with elephants we’re reminded of their intelligence and the intricate complexity of their social connections. The gentle touch of a trunk can communicate so much. Elephants fulfil an integral role in African ecosystems, not just as landscape engineers that aid other species, but as icons with which it’s difficult not to become deeply attached. Over and above their obvious physical stature, they exude an emotional and intellectual depth and complexity expressed through behaviours that mirror our own human emotions and social bonds. They are an irreplaceable keystone species, and when we lose that presence, the void is vast. Some estimates tell us that Africa’s elephants have declined by 77%, on average, in the past five decades. It’s impossible to comprehend the full extent of that loss. But we know that the world is a poorer place without them. It’s difficult to capture the sheer magnitude and magnificence of a Kenyan sunset – a sky that burns with brushstrokes of red and orange silhouetting a lone tree or a passing zebra that accent the landscape infusing it with contrast and depth. Moments like this evoke awe and quiet reverence. They are a reminder of our connection to the natural world and all other living things. And as we marvel at Mother Nature’s handiwork, we’re compelled to think about the delicate balance of life and our role within it. Through this sense of wonder, we find inspiration to protect our planet for future generations. #sunset #wildlife #conservation
Under the very watchful gaze of a herd of zebras, this dominant male paused briefly to shoot us a cursory glance — his eyes burning with intensity — before turning and walking away. It’s always a privilege to spend time with Africa’s big cats, to gain tiny glimpses into their secretive worlds and to slowly unravel the mysteries that dictate life in the pride. As habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict continue to threatened lions (and other wild species), we only hope that we’ll still have the privilege of looking into lion eyes in the future. #lions #wildlife
In the crisp, icy dawn, softened by swirling mist rising from a stream, this lone spotted hyena braved the cold water, wading to the other side where he’ll find refuge for the day when the temperature starts to climb. Hyenas are usually more active at cooler times of the day and prefer to do their hunting and prowling under the cover of darkness. Although they get much of the moisture they need from their prey, they’ll drink when fresh water is available. They also seem acutely aware that most plains game is water-dependent, so where there’s a river or stream, food is never far away. In a swirling haze of dust and confusion, an ancient rivalry plays out. For the lions, success lies in their ability to work together and strategise, coordinating the chaos to work in their favour. But a buffalo is no easy target; hunts like these are about favouring reward over risk. Sadly, there’s an even greater risk that threatens even the hardiest of both predator and prey: dwindling space. As human development surges ever forward, natural habitats are shrinking and many species are being forced into smaller and smaller pockets of fragmented land where survival can be tenuous. Through @GreatPlainsConservation and @GreatPlainsFoundation, we have been working to protect natural habitats, rewildling landscapes and providing a home for imperilled species. It’s a small step towards a more sustainable future – something that we will never stop striving for. A gentle nuzzle to say hello. Zebras use a number of strategies to communicate including facial expressions, sound and ear positioning. Their versatile vocal range includes loud braying and barking as well as soft snorting sounds. Silent communication takes the form of careful ear positioning, teeth barring and even how wide open their eyes are. There is likely an entire zebra language comprised of subtle actions and sounds that we are yet to decipher – and possibly never will. The weather can change suddenly on Kenya’s vast plains. Sunny skies are quickly darkened by leaden, dark-grey clouds swollen with the promise of rain. For antelope like topi that spend much of their time grazing on open plains, the clouds are a welcome sight, bringing with them the power to trigger new growth rich in nutrients. #wildlife #Kenya

#Repost from @natgeo A backward gaze across the Kenyan plains. It’s a long, dangerous, and often brutal road to becoming a predatory ruler in these parts. From their very first year, male lions face the toughest of survival odds: Only about 1 in every 8 male cubs will make it to adulthood. Whether from rival carnivores, injuries, hunger, or even the threat of their own kind as incoming males attempt to take over prides, the dangers are unrelenting. Later, there are high-risk stretches of nomadic life when maturing lions are expelled from their natal pride to seek their own luck. Behind every battle-seasoned male is a story of resilience and the sheer willpower it takes to endure.
Hippos have a fearsome reputation built on territorial aggression and sheer size, but hippos calves – like most young animals – remain vulnerable to attacks from predators or becoming entangled in skirmishes for prime real estate. Hippo calves are often born in the water and spend much their early life there, sticking close to mom for protection on whom they are entirely dependent for the first 6-8 months of their lives. Females with young usually separate themselves from the pod to focus on calf-raising duties and will defend their babies with the kind of gusto only hippos can muster. A pair of honey-eyed cheetah cubs eagerly wait for their mom to return (hopefully with a meal). At this age, the youngsters have not yet developed the skills, strength or knowledge needed to defend themselves against rival predators. Their only source of protection is their mom and she must temporally abandon them in order to hunt leaving the cubs especially vulnerable. Like many other predators, the survival rate of cheetah cubs is low – some estimates suggest only about 10% of youngsters make it to adulthood. That’s bad news for a species that only numbers around 7,000 in the wild. #cheetahs #wildlife
For decades, big cats have been at the heart of our work – we’ve captured their beauty, told their stories, witnessed their struggles, and fought for their survival. Today, they need us more than ever. From now until May, I am offering six limited-edition fine art prints to support the @GreatPlainsFoundation’s Big Cats Initiative (BCI) – a vital conservation program @DereckJoubert and I founded over a decade ago to protect these apex predators and the ecosystems they call home. 100% of the profits go directly to conservation efforts on the ground, funding anti-poaching initiatives, habitat protection, and community engagement. Big cats are vanishing at an alarming rate due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. Without urgent intervention, these iconic predators could disappear from the wild within our lifetime. By purchasing a print, you’re not just bringing the wild into your home; you’re helping secure a future where big cats continue to roam free. Let’s protect big cats, together. 🐆💛 👉 Tap the link in my bio to explore the collection and make a difference. 📸 Print options: 🖼️ Two portrait images (120cm x 80cm) – $850 each 🖼️ Four landscape images (51cm x 34cm) – $550 each #BigCatsInitiative #Conservation #SaveBigCats #WildlifeArt #PhotographyForACause #BigCatConservation #lion #leopard #cheetah #bigcats #GreatPlainsConservation #DereckandBeverlyJoubert #EcoTourism #conservation #ConservationTourism #GreatPlainsFoundation

#Repost from @natgeo A storm gathers in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. Elephants’ feet may support a creature of extraordinary size, but they are also highly sensitive—sensitive enough to detect the far-off rumblings of an impending storm. Nerve endings in the skin and fatty cushions are attuned to the faint tremors carried through the earth. By lifting one foot and pressing the other deeper into the ground, elephants pick up these signals and home in on the source—sometimes as far as 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. It’s an invaluable skill, especially in times of drought when the promise of rain means life-giving water.
