My friend Bevali sent me this video from our last group trip to Costa Rica with the caption: ‘Is this how you’re getting to the airport now?😜 I laughed my ass off! And then texted back, ‘We ain’t that fuckin broke!’ In between bouts of crying, remembering a precious item that is now lost for ever, crying some more, remembering my last birthday party thrown at our house & my heart stopping for a second, then crying again, missing the view of Los Angeles from my deck, where I used to sit with a blanket in the middle of the night after everyone had gone to bed, there is the joy in having wonderful friends who have enveloped me & the Ninja in love, support, & humour. We’ve had a fuckin ludicrous waste of a day……
It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions these past few weeks. I still can’t believe the home me & the Ninja put our hearts & souls into, is gone. We picked every aspect of the house, devouring every episode of @hgtv & turning it into a hub for friends & family. In the few years we had it, our home was the epicenter of epic parties thanksgivings, passovers & impromptu BBQs, just because, & of course #choonsontuesdays We truly thought we would end our days there. We were amongst the many who were totally fucked over by our insurance companies. Fuck u and your stupid lizard @geico. But we count ourselves lucky, that we have somewhere else to stay, & the means to sustain ourselves while we fight the inevitable long lawsuit against those responsible for this fire, & those who will take our money, but not keep up their end of the bargain when the time comes. It’ll be a few years before we will be able to rebuild, but we can’t wait to get back to #altadena. It’s our favourite place we’ve ever lived & we want to contribute to keeping its legacy alive. In the meantime, I’m gonna sit here & cry a bit over these memories, then I’m gonna get up & get the fuck on with life. Feel free to cry with me. #altadenastrong #altadenaisnotforsale

This wonderful person @lizknightcreative sent us a painting she did of our house, which we will gladly hang in our Costa Rica home, until we can once again return to #altadena & rebuild. The new house will likely still have mid century vibes, but will be built from a bunch of fire retardant concrete, roof sprinklers, Kryptonite, Vibranium & whatever the fuck else will protect it from the results of global warming & corporate neglect. But our original baby will never be forgotten. PS we used to call those 2 palms the Nana trees, coz they represented us, GiNA & NiNA. They are still there, waiting for us. Ninja & I had never heard of #altadena when we were house hunting at the end of 2020. A member of my @bobheartsabishola writer’s room mentioned that it might be a good fit for us. My first question was ‘ How many black people live there!?’ We took a drive down, & saw black people living their best lives. Jogging without fear, walking their dogs & generally living the American dream. We immediately fell in love, narrowed down our search & were able to join this special community in December 2020. We bought our home, spent a significant amount upgrading it, & made it a centre for all our friends and family. We had a keyless lock, so our friends could let themselves in and jump in the pool or hot tub when we were out of town. Epic parties were thrown there, dinner parties, and friendsgivings. We loved our local eateries, and mom & pop stores like @1rhythmsofthevillage. Our house & the majority of these small businesses were consumed by the fires. We are absolutely devastated. My fear now is that many legacy black & brown families being screwed by their devil insurance companies, will be driven out of the area, unable to rebuild, and our beautiful town will be descended on by vulture developers, who will replace our wonderful architecture with glass box condos for rich tech bros, & trust fund babies, the spirit of #altadena gone for ever. I hope I’m wrong. But I’m probably not. PLEASE DONATE to all the gofundmes of vulnerable families in the neighborhood when you see them. Went to #puertoviejo Costa Rica for 3 days last year, left with a plot of land & a vague idea. Now it’s growing before my eyes. I’ve never been good with money, but my Mumz instilled in me a love of real estate, so whenever I get a chunk, I throw it down on a property, so it doesn’t stay in the bank getting spunked on Jewelry, gadgets & sneaks, well not ALL of it 😂 Thank you @bobheartsabishola I’m excited about this one.
