Merry Christmas from my family to yours 🎄❤️❄️
“For me, the actual work of it, of acting, has always been about pleasure,” says #ELLEWIH honoree #JulianneMoore. “And I really crave it and I crave the people that I do it with and it brings me a lot of joy. I thought that I could be done with it at some point, and the surprise has been that I’m not. There’s always something to learn, people to learn from, things to explore.” Moore discussed the through line in her career and acting with #TildaSwinton in Pedro Almodóvar’s #TheRoomNextDoor. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 🎄
Today’s #WomenCrushWednesday is Danielle Closs, a @MomsDemand volunteer from Torrington, Wyoming. Danielle began volunteering with the Wyoming chapter of Moms Demand Action in 2023. In her town of just 6,000 people, she began spreading the message of @BeSMARTforKids: a campaign to prevent suicides, school shootings, and unintentional shootings by children and teens by promoting secure firearm storage. As Wyoming has the highest rate of gun suicide in the nation and high household firearm ownership, Danielle’s advocacy was critical. This year, she begins her tenure as Chapter Leader for the entire state where she will continue to guide efforts to promote secure storage and prevent gun violence. When asked about her advocacy journey, Danielle says: “I started volunteering because I feared for my kids. We live in a country where parents who send their kids off to school in the morning live with a seed of fear in their stomach. Volunteering with Moms Demand Action has not taken away that fear, but it has given me something to do with that fear. I’ve taken that seed and grown it into action, encouraging safe and responsible gun ownership in hopes of a safer future for my kids, and for everyone.” Thank you, Danielle, for showing us how to turn our fear into our fight. #wcw

This year, I’ll be continuing my weekly #WomenCrushWednesday posts, lifting up champions in the gun safety movement and celebrating their tremendous work. Today, I’d like to feature Loree Peery of Spirit Lake, Idaho. Loree is a volunteer with @Everytown’s Gun Sense Action Network (GSAN), a program that provides volunteers across the country the opportunity to take action on gun safety from home. GSAN volunteers spend time each week calling new supporters to help plug them into the gun safety movement and turn them into gun sense activists. They also call constituents in key districts to connect them with their legislators and to help elect Gun Sense Candidates. For Loree, this means being able to advocate for gun safety and grow the movement from her small town in rural northern Idaho, where she’s made calls to states across the country. “During the 2022 midterms, my team was able to call into Virginia to invite supporters to canvas for Gun Sense Candidates,” Loree recalls. Many of those candidates were elected into office. Loree is also a survivor of gun violence: On September 11, 1976, Loree’s mother, Janet Wollan, was shot and killed by a domestic abuser, and in an instant, Loree and her family’s lives were irrevocably changed. Loree is now determined through her activism to honor all those impacted by gun violence: “I do this work for all victims and their families devastated by gun violence. It shouldn’t happen to anyone.” Thank you @loreeeileen and the hundreds of GSAN volunteers across the country. To volunteer with the Gun Sense Action Network this year, text VOLUNTEER to 644-33 or click the link in my bio. #wcw

Julie Ort of Douglas County, Colorado is my #WomenCrushWednesday today. Julie is a @MomsDemand volunteer and a fellow with the @Everytown Survivor Network. Julie was 13 years old when she and a group of friends went to TP a stranger’s home as part of a slumber party prank. The homeowner responded by opening fire on the group of children, striking Julie in the back and immediately rendering her paralyzed from the chest down. Some in the community were outraged—though not at the shooter—but with Julie and her friends, even going so far as sending hate mail claiming Julie deserved to be shot and that they would have shot her, too. Now a paraplegic 13-year-old, Julie came to believe that, to some, her life was worth less than a gun. For the next 40 years, Julie remained silent about her shooting, fearful of those who valued their weapons over people’s lives. But in 2019, she joined her local Moms Demand Action group and later joined the Everytown Survivor Network, where she found strength in her activism and determination to end the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S. “Now, I relish telling my story and testifying at the state Capitol,” Julie says. “It makes me feel empowered—like I am finally fighting for my 13-year-old self and for others.” After years of rehab, Julie has regained significant function and is now able to walk with the assistance of two canes and a leg brace. Today, she is the leader of Douglas County Moms Demand Action, where she continues to grow her group while inspiring fellow volunteers and survivors to #KeepGoing in this movement. #wcw
My #WomenCrushWednesday today is Paula Hamilton, a @MomsDemand volunteer and survivor of gun violence from Springfield, Missouri. Paula’s grandson, Melvin, was tragically shot and killed on August 18, 2019. The following year, her son opened a recording studio, 818 Ankh Sounds, named in Melvin’s memory. “My family recognizes August 18 as ‘Ankh Day’ in his honor,” says Paula. Paula then began working closely with her local Moms Demand Action group to advocate for gun safety. “The reason I am so dedicated to Moms is because they gave me an avenue to grieve his horrible death,” she adds. Paula recently moved to Florida to be closer to family but served as the Missouri chapter’s Community Outreach Leader through 2024. One of her many accomplishments in this role included the partnership she built with the Police Chief of Springfield, which began after Paula attended a monthly “Coffee with the Chief” gathering. The two built a rapport, and Paula was eventually invited to present the work of Moms Demand Action to the Chief’s Citizen Advisory Group, a gathering of community leaders who develop actionable items to address issues facing the city. Following her presentation, Paula was invited to attend the advisory group regularly to represent the gun violence prevention advocacy work of her Moms Demand Action chapter. She and her fellow volunteers have been doing so now for almost three years, providing them the essential opportunity to combat gun violence in their city in tandem with other advocates. Thank you, Paula, for honoring your grandson through your commitment to your community and the partnerships that you build. Together, we can end gun violence. #wcw

“Do not put a period behind my son’s name—because my son is still talking, because his mom is still standing.” – Brenda Mitchell of University Park, Illinois, and this week’s #WomenCrushWednesday Tomorrow will be 20 years since Brenda’s son, Kenneth, was shot and killed just days after seeing her other son, Kevin, off to his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. Kenneth was 31-years-old with 2 sons and a third born just 30 days later. When Kevin returned safely after his tour, he gave up his military career to care for his brother’s children. Today, Brenda is a force for change. She has been a volunteer with @MomsDemand for over 10 years, where she has served as Chapter Leader for the State of Illinois, a National Trainer, a National Mentor, and a member of the Grassroots Leadership Team, in addition to being an @Everytown Survivor Network fellow. An ordained minister, she is also involved in multiple trauma and healing organizations including the Chicago based group Purpose Over Pain and leads a weekly Healing Circle Grief Support Group. Brenda’s work has been vital to the gun violence prevention movement both in her community and across the country. Please join me today in thanking @bkmitchell1 and holding Kenneth in your heart. #wcw
