“En Route” was an opportunity to collaborate with @karishmaswali77 and @chanakya.school who visually reconstructed the cultural legacy of these six extraordinary women. The stories and trajectories of the travelers offer the possibility of tracing alternative routes and imaginary cartographies where garments, fabrics, and embroidery techniques are devices of geographical knowledge and identity construction. “En Route” is a conceptual, artistic, and visual journey that highlights the unexpected connections between the historic craftsmanship of geographically distant communities. This project is a celebration of community work, which is the foundation of craft, characterized by sharing, strengthening the sense of community through the transmission of knowledge, with the awareness of being a small part of an incredible process. #enroute @bibliotecaapostolicavaticana

Thank you so much for the birthday wishes! To be 11 again 🎂
@lorenzojova is the contemporary traveler. He is entrusted with the story of travels around the world through a narrative made of personal memories, soundtracks, travel diaries, drawings, and books. Welcoming visitors are three monumental Torans, the result of the artistic collaboration between @lorenzojova, @karishmaswali77 , and the @chanakya.school, handcrafted by 55 artisans. The central Toran celebrates Lorenzo’s travels through 31 countries, each represented by a unique textile tradition, while the other two side ones combine Western and Indian musical heritages, reflecting the harmony between sound and craftsmanship. A meeting between music, craftsmanship, and traditions, this collaboration celebrates physical and symbolic journeys, connecting past and present, local and global, through vibrant threads and shared rhythms of humanity. #enroute @bibliotecaapostolicavaticana

In the center of the Barberini Library, two globes trace the migrations of fabrics and embroideries at different historical moments. The first globe reproduces traditional cartographies with various weaving and embroidery techniques to illustrate the richness of textile culture in different areas of the world, honoring the meeting of cultures. The second, however, outlines an imaginary, more intimate geography, telling the fantasies and desires of the women artisans of the Chanakya school. Many of them have never traveled beyond their local communities, outside the region, many do not possess a passport, but all dream of traveling to know the world. In the space, there is a trunk containing banner garments, inspired by the vestimentary transformations of the six pioneers along their journeys. #enroute @bibliotecaapostolicavaticana

The setup in the Barberini Library is a site-specific installation that honors and documents artisanal tradition in dialogue with the adventurous spirit of the six pioneering explorers. The story of the travelers woven with embroidery meets the revolutionary design philosophy of designer Nanni Strada, who with her 1974 Mappamodello connects geography with patterns. The garments worn by the six explorers were the first to be modified to enable and facilitate the movements necessary to undertake the journey. The panels on display were created by layering linen and hemp threads, then dried and enriched with delicate kanta embroidery, making this fabric similar to ancient parchment. Together with Karishma Swali, we studied how each embroidery and panel could tell the evolution of women’s clothing in a game of overlaps and cultural references. A final embroidered panel reads: “Femininity, The Trap” on the pattern of a corset. A tribute to Simone de Beauvoir, who first recognized the constrictive function of femininity. #enroute @bibliotecaapostolicavaticana

The journey I undertook followed the traces of six women: Annie Londonderry, Elizabeth Bisland, Nellie Bly, Gertrude Bell, Agnes Smith Lewis, and Margaret Dunlop Gibson, who – from the second half of the 19th century – defied taboos, social conventions, and prejudices in search of their own identity. “En Route” is a celebration of the resilience, curiosity, and vision of women whose journeys paved new paths towards female independence. Opening on February 15th at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. #enroute @bibliotecaapostolicavaticana
As part of the Jubilee celebrations, the Vatican Apostolic Library inaugurates the “En Route” exhibition curated by Giacomo Cardinali, Simona De Crescenzo, Francesca Giannetto, Delio V. Proverbio. On this occasion, I had the honor of being invited along with my dear friend @lorenzojova and @kristjanaswilliams to reflect on the theme of travel in a personal way, each with their own tools and baggage, through writing, music, and drawings. #enroute @bibliotecaapostolicavaticana
@kristjanaswilliams revisits the journeys of the Italian diplomat Cesare Poma and creates collages of maps that are compositions combining historical and traditional cartography with imaginary and fantasy elements. Through her collages on display, the illustrator creates consultation tools that serve to connect the more historical dimension of the collection’s documents with elements related to the personal and collective imagination of travel. I wish to thank @karishmaswali77 @chanakya.school for being my travel companions in this magnificent experience. @maria_alicata @ugolinip and @matiasjulian_nativo for their curatorial support – essential to making this project possible and bringing together these multiple voices – and to @slaterpins for the catalogue text which perfectly put into words this project. A huge thanks to @lorenzojova and @kristjanaswilliams companions in this exhibition adventure, and to Don Giacomo Cardinali for this wonderful unexpected invitation. #enroute @bibliotecaapostolicavaticana
