Happy birthday, Deepti di! Over the years…I knew you first as an outstanding actor in my growing up years, then as Baba’s friend, then as a co-actor in Bawandar, then as my friend, then as my actor in Firaaq, then as my son’s masi and now as all of it and more! So happy and honoured to have known such a special person and artist. May you keep shining through your writings, paintings, acting and life! Big hug on this day and forever! @deepti.naval here are some images, in no particular order and only a few from our long friendship.

Today is the International Day of Education. Many children don’t get it at all. Some who do, it can’t be called education. And a few who are actually close to nature, working with their hands, given the space to question and encouraged to think and reflect, are truly fortunate. But such disparity is unacceptable. Real education for all should be non-negotiable. It is every child’s right. As a mother, what I want for my child, I wish for every child in this world. Sharing some images from where my son studies. No place is perfect, but some of the things that I hold dear are there and we are grateful for that. I know just wishing is of no use. We all, in our own little way need to work towards it. I try to engage with students and teachers whenever I can. We have to listen to what the children have to say. Or else celebrating this day would just be tokenism.

Wim Wenders in India! Thanks to Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and his amazing Film Heritage Foundation that Wim Wenders is here in India with touring 5 cities with his 18 films and his inspiring talks and Q and As. When I went to the filmmakers’ round table, I didn’t know it would move me so deeply. I’ve been to many festivals as an actor, director and juror, and have had the opportunity to meet various film personalities over the years. But Wim Wenders is unique in his humanity, his depth and his generosity in sharing his wisdom and experiences. His wide ranging films reflect his interest in and hope for humanity and his innate creative eye and ear for visuals and sound. Only someone who is so comfortable in his skin and has deep convictions about what he wants to say and how, can have such an independent and original voice. Do watch his films and hear him in Kolkata, Delhi, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram. Check out @filmheritagefoundation for more info. It was heartening to see so many young people attend his screenings and talks in Mumbai. Not to be missed if you want to reset your life and not just your art. @wimwendersfoundation #wimwenders

Today Manto passed away. And making the film on him reaffirmed my faith that stories have the ability to impact how we think and feel. That people and their choices have the ability to inspire us. Their courage gives us the strengh to face challenges. Their truth, make us reflect on our’s. But such people are often not ‘liked’ becuase they are too blunt and have no patience for mediocrity. They suffer in their lifetime and are celebrated once they are gone! So let’s try and keep that Mantoiyat alive in us and celebrate the few and far between, to those it comes naturally.
Had this conversation in December with the lovely @mirchisayema . Hoping every drop counts. Bullying scars not just the one who is bullied but also the one who bullies. #StopBullying #antibullyingcampaign #buddyhojao
