Lions spend much of their time dozing, reserving their energy for nighttime pursuits. Watching them laze in the heat of the day, often splayed out in languid bliss, it’s easy to forget just how powerful and formidable these cats can be when the situation calls for it. These two males—one young and inexperienced, the other a dominant force—clashed over territorial rights. Although the skirmish was brief (as these disagreements often are) it was explosive: teeth bared and muscles tensed, the cats wrestled in the swirling dust, their growls and snarls breaking the stillness of the evening. The dispute was settled quickly, the older victor laying claim to the turf while the youngster was forced to skulk away in defeat. Elephant calves spend many hours during their formative years engaged in playful ‘wrestling matches’ with their siblings. These trunk flailing, ear-flapping spells are truly a joy to watch and we feel privileged to be able to bear witness to these fleeing moments that help shape young calves in vital ways. In elephant herds, knowledge is passed on through generations. Where to forage, the sometimes tricky tasks of separating friend from foe, or how to navigate the intricate web of relationships within the herd are all lessons that get passed down through the actions and behaviours of senior members of the herd. There is perhaps no animal quite as unique and mesmerisingly unusual as the pangolin. The only mammal to be entirely covered in scales – an armoured defence that’s remarkably effective at protecting against even the most resilient of predators (take a look at the clip from Game of Lions linked in my bio to see how they fare against Africa’s biggest cats) – pangolins are also equipped with sharp claws to help tear open termite and ant nests revealing cavities into which a long, sticky tongue can probe for food. Encountering a pangolin in the wild is like stumbling across some ancient being, a creature that seems too implausible to be shuffling across the dusty savannah. Yet, despite their elusive nature, pangolins remain one of the world’s most trafficked species – trapped in a cruel trade fuelled by demand for their scales and meat. Hippo fights can appear frightfully dramatic. Ear-piercing ‘wheeze-honks’ and grunts are followed by violent, open-mouthed head thrashing resulting in an explosion of spectacular splashes. As brutal as they may seem, these battles are usually all for show. Male rivals will test each other with a display of force to gauge their opponent’s strength and establish who holds rank. Sometimes, the pageantry does turn violent, though, and the weaker male could be on the receiving end of a sharp incisor. Beyond their power and presence, hippos are essential to the ecosystems they inhabit. By moving between land and water, they help shape river systems, fertilise wetlands, and create pathways for other species to thrive. Sadly, like many other wild species, hippos face increasing threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal hunting. Protecting them means protecting the delicate balance of Africa’s waterways.
