Laws alone aren’t enough when harm continues to infiltrate homes, schools, and online spaces. While survivors, activists, and legal experts keep raising their voices, the rest of society must also be held accountable—because this fight isn’t over. I had the privilege of joining @equalitynoworg’s powerful five-part series alongside @phil_director, @bencyco, a group of students, and duty bearers in Nairobi to unpack the evolving nature of violence, including tech-facilitated exploitation. This conversation is urgent. Watch the episode now on Equality Now’s YouTube and explore the rest of the series, featuring the incredible @kambuamuziki. #BreakTheCycle #EndGBV #JusticeForAll

I love the quote, “Shame dies when stories are told.” We could take it a step further by adding, “in safe spaces.” Easier said than done, because shame has a way of manifesting in our lives—sometimes as self-doubt, silence, or even misplaced guilt. But what happens when we confront it head-on? Behind the scenes of our #womensday special with Adelle Onyango and Caroline Mutoko (those videos are up on our various channels), our production team and I took a moment to have an open conversation about speaking to our shame instead of letting it define us. What does your shame sound like, and how do you respond to it? Let’s talk. #itsofficialwithjanetmbugua #ConfrontYourShame #HealingThroughConversation #WomensDaySpecial Filmed and edited by @leonmalu
To commemorate International Women’s Day, Legally Clueless Africa, in collaboration with @womenlifthealth, hosted a powerful live discussion on feminism! We had influential voices such as Dr. Norah Obudho, @officialjanetmbugua, Evelyne Opondo and an incredible live audience, have a conversation on feminism within the African context. We explored the root causes of gender inequality in our communities and how we can go about achieving equal rights, power, and opportunities for ALL women. “When women have the power of choice, they gain the power of voice.” I mean 🤷🏾♀️ Unpaid care work isn’t just about time—it’s about autonomy. Sitting down with @adelleonyango and @caroline.mutoko for this conversation opened my eyes even more to how deeply this issue impacts women’s ability to pursue education, careers, and leadership. The weight of unpaid labor isn’t just personal; it’s systemic. When care work is recognized and supported, women can make informed choices about their futures, step into spaces of influence, and thrive. This discussion taught me so much, and I know it will do the same for you. Watch the full conversation—now live on my YouTube page! You map out your life, your travels, your work… and then boom—a ninja, COVID-like sickness strikes. Suddenly, your entire family is down, and you’re left sending a million apologies, feeling hurt, confused, and yes, even ashamed—not just for yourself but for those who were counting on you. The biggest weight? The opportunities lost, especially for the people who worked so hard alongside you. Really gutted that I won’t make it to Austin, Texas, to attend SXSW, and I’ve been put on sick leave for a week. I’ll also have to #FixTheNation from a distance. It’s wild how the body can throw you off course (honestly haven’t felt this sick since 2021, but no, I’m not fishing for sympathy!). In many ways, it feels like my body is saying, “Relax, I’ve got other plans—you just have to trust me.” Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused, but also giving myself grace because this was beyond my control. Also folks, please mask up in crowded spaces—this virus is no joke. So many people are seriously unwell right now. That said, here are some moments I’m still celebrating: 2. Honored to be featured on this incredible LinkedIn list for Women’s Day week, alongside some truly amazing women. Full list on my LinkedIn profile (at-JanetMbugua) 3. #FixingTheNation on NTV Kenya and Nation FM just turned a month old on March 3rd, and it’s already been such an eye-opening journey! 4. As we celebrate milestones, let’s also hold space for the urgent conversation on ending femicide. We must keep amplifying this issue. #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #Life #OtherPlans #EndFemicideKe #SickLeave

Does Anyone Care About Care Work? Short answer? We all should. 💯 Women in Africa spend nearly 5x more time on unpaid care work than men—yet it’s rarely acknowledged, let alone supported. How can we talk about women’s economic power without addressing this? I had a powerful, eye-opening conversation with @caroline.mutoko & @adelleonyango on how care work holds women back—and what needs to change. Some real gems came out of it, and I know we can all take something away from this. Ahead of #IWD2025, let’s make this issue visible. Because if we don’t talk about it, who will? Full video drops this weekend! #WomensEconomicPower #IWD2025 #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #IWDSpecial #UnpaidCareWork Filmed by @leonmalu and @cyrus.kanyi Edited by @leonmalu

Too many women in Kenya are losing their lives at the hands of men they know—partners, exes, acquaintances. And too often, these cases go ignored, dismissed, or blamed on the victims. Femicide isn’t just “another news story.” It’s a crisis. A pattern. A reflection of a society that hasn’t done enough to protect women. We need to talk about it. We need to demand justice. We need to hold systems accountable. Because silence only allows the violence to continue. Tag someone who needs to be part of this conversation. Let’s raise awareness, push for change, and fight for a country where women are safe. Join the Ni Mama Forum and @endfemicideke as they speak up and demand action; something each of us should do. #EndFemicide #SayHerName #StopTheViolence #JusticeForWomen #InternationalWomensDay #EndFemicideKE

Femicide isn’t just a headline—it’s a crisis. Women are being murdered simply for existing, and we cannot stay silent. As we approach #InternationalWomensDay, the Ni Mama Forum and @endfemicideke are demanding action. Follow, speak up, and be part of the change. “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” (Alice Walker) #EndFemicideKE #AccelerateAction
I’m frustrated 😣 Why do we have to soften our words around femicide just to make people comfortable? Why are 21 million people struggling with the cost of living while those in power look the other way? And why aren’t more people talking about how these two issues are connected—neglect, inequality, and gendered violence all come from the same broken system. We can’t afford to stay silent. We need to have these conversations. We need to turn frustration into action. Because if we don’t demand change, who will? Even in my frustration, I often leave room for hope. We have to. #TurnAngerIntoAction #FemicideKE #CostOfLivingCrisis #JusticeForAll #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #bts

Each day, we’re #FixingTheNation…with you, our fellow fixers! (Side note; we had to fix our faces in the face of untruths this week alone. Phew! More on that soon). But the mission remains: fixing the nation one conversation at a time, one truth at a time, one tough but necessary dialogue at a time. Engaging where the truth is elusive isn’t easy, but it’s essential. Change only happens when we’re willing to confront, question, and push forward—no matter how uncomfortable it gets. #StayEngaged #FixingTheNation, 6AM to 10AM every week day, on @ntvkenya @nationfm_kenya and across social media.
